Hey all, my wife and I have the adventure of a lifetime planned for our first wedding aniversary the last week in April, we're driving our new Mustang Convertible from Atlanta to Key West (stopping to see family in Daytona on the way) the last week in April and then going from the Key's to see Buffett's May 1st show in Sunrise, before returning home again via Daytona.
So here's the deal, I was thinking about adding a day to our vacation to see the Everglades and give us extra time driving between Homestead and Key west on the 27st to just kick back and enjoy ourselves. We know what we want to do when we reach Parrothead Mecca but what about the last 150 Miles?
Anybody have any recommendations on things to do with an afternoon in the Everglades and places that can't be missed when driving the last 150 miles between Homestead and Key West?
Thanks!!!

Well, go ahead and book an extra night wherever you are staying for the Buffett concert. Because a good place for an afternoon in the glades is only 10 miles or less from where he will be playing. Besides, the morning after the concert you KNOW you aren't getting up till noon!!
Sawgrass Recreational Park - The airboat rides are fun and I don't think they have them in the national park further south.

Then you can start fresh the next day for the rest of that 150 miles to Key West. It will take most of the day as there is plenty to see. You will find that you are stopping more often than you are going.
If you scroll down through this section a bit, you will find many threads that make recommendations for the drive from Miami to Milemarker 0.
Have fun! Perhaps I'll run into you at the concert.

Glad to hear you decided to see some of Florida and the Keys on your way to KW. I live out in southwestern Dade county in the Redlands, just a short walk to the everglades.
A can recommend a bunch of things. To get to the park entrance, you will take SW 344th Street, it's the first stoplight as soon as the Turnpike dumps you off onto Rt. 1. The big green sign will tell you to take a right to the park. 3 miles down the road, as you turn left to get to the park, you will pass a little farmers market called Robert is Here. Strange name, but that is anothere story. You can get tropical fruit smoothies there that are made on the spot, plus a variety of fruits that are grown locally. This is a great time here, as many fruits are available now.
The park has a good visitors center at the entrance, I would recommend this as it will show you what the everglades once were and how the restoreation projects are coming along.
The drive through the park is about 25 miles, ending in what was once an old fishing village called Flamingo. I recommend stopping at all the viewing areas and taking the time to "hear" the everglades. I often do this on a day off, very relaxing.
You could easily spend a whole day in the park, no problem. In Flamingo, there is a nice view of the backcountry of Florida Bay. Nice little gift shop and boat tours are available.
This response has become wordy. I guess what you should do is this. If you get to the glades, take the time to take it all in. There is nowhere else in the world that duplicates it. Also, take a drive over to the main Biscayne Park. I often go reef diving out there. Won't take as long, unless you take one of the boat rides out to the reef. I recommend this, but it's up to you.
There is alot of Florida to see and do here, but you need to get off Rt. 1 to do them.
Any question feel free to ask!
