Turnabout- Due for Fair Concert Play
I'm a fan of JB since CILCIA came out but I like many of you go back way before that. One of my favorite JB tunes that never gets concert play is "Turnabout" from the genesis album Down to Earth. A sample of a song that I guess is semi-biographical and takes me back.
TURNABOUT Jimmy Buffett
As large as life she stood there
Kissed my cheek and called my old nickname
And though several years had passed
Both of us still looked quite the same
I said Hi, relaxed a bit then asked her how she'd been all these years
She told me she was feeling fine and came to see a friend who lived up here

I agree....great song...would love to hear it live!!! That's my favorite song from his first 2 albums combined...We should have more threads discussing his "old" songs...It's a treasure chest full of great music that more casual parrotheads may have never opened.

As Long As Daddymenion it
She told me she had finished school
And then went on to college for a year
I asked if she had married
And slowly down her cheek there came a tear
She said just an itchy eye it must be the weather way up here
Told her I can't stand the cold
It freezes me and I can't feel my ears
We talked a bit about Mobile
And thought about how it has never changed
I told her I was comin' home to spend some time
And hoped it wouldn't rain
She asked if she could see me then
And we could spend some time now and then
Because I lived so far away
Was still no chance why we could not be friends
I drove her to the waiting plane
And watched that big jet streaking through the sky
Thought about the sad young girl
And the time that I just saw her cry
That flame must still be burning bright
I think I'll catch a later flight today
It's time for me to go on home and spend a day or two down by the bay
He don't write em like that no more. The music even enhances the lyrics.

Turnabout
Hey Jahfin
As long as you showed up. I picked up a double CD of Tom Rush's yesterday including his cover of Desperados Waitin for A Train. As you know better than most that's a Guy Clark classic later covered by JJW.
You are right, after White Sportcoat, it seems JB got amnesia over the earlier albums. He now considers stuff from AIA or LAD3/4 - "the treasure chest".
BTW who's the rasta gentleman in your avatar? Reminds me of Snoop Dog.

Cool on "Desperadoes". One of my favorite covers of that song is by the Highwaymen but I must say I prefer Guy's original over all the rest.Goodman wrote:Hey Jahfin

Well, Buffett must of thought enough of some that early material to return to it a few years later. Especially in the case of "Captain and The Kid", "In The Shelter" and "Livingston's Gone To Texas" so maybe there's hope. Same goes for Rancho Deluxe and "Livingston Saturday Night" showing up on Son of a Son of a Sailor (even though I prefer the earlier uncensored version) and "Wonder Why We Ever Go Home" which later appeared on Changes in Latitudes. I'd love to hear him do Rancho Deluxe live sometime myself.
The Rastaman is none other than the late, great Mr. Peter Tosh.
True but that's one of the songs he must of felt strongly enough about to go back and re-record for Changes. I heard him do the reggae version a few years ago as well. I'm not so fond of some of the revised versions that appear on Meet Me In Margaritaville but I do like that one.rednekkPH wrote:I think the first 2 albums were some of his best work. Turnabout, Truckstop Salvation, Ellis Dee, Ace, The Hangout Gang (my personal favorite JB tune)... it's a shame we don't hear this stuff live (although he did play a version of in the shelter at a few gigs last year).

I'm not sure Buffett will ever completely retire but I'd love to see him do a smaller scale tour with just him, Jerry Jeff and maybe Mac doing some of the lesser known songs. I also don't tend to think of Buffett fans as "real" or not. I think even if someone's knowledge only extends to the songs on the greatest hits record, that doesn't make them any less of a fan than anyone else but maybe that's just how I feel about it.
