Captain and the Kid does it for me, my younger brother died a few years ago and I'm the Captain and he was the kid.
OPH breaks me up sometimes when I think about my younger days down in the islands.
When I sat in the front row center turning 40 and Jimmy was on his Pirate Looks at 40 tour, he sat on the stool 10 feet away and sang PLA40, I totally lost it! Jimmy looked at me and smiled.

yep , son of a son does me in almost every time!!
When my niece was about 6 months, I started singing it to her to put her to sleep at the beach, and 2 years later it still works. Now she has a new baby brother, and that song has soothed him thru many bouts of teething.
Just hearing that song reminds me how they've got that baby smell and how they feel my arms when they fall asleep. oh man....i'm getting all mushy!!!
There's something in the wind tonight, some kind of change in the weather.

From a male perspective:

My son was born 3 months premature. Thank god he was just little.

Anyway, I spend many nights after work humming "Pirate" as I rocked him to sleep in the NICU. Once he was home, Buffett songs were a constant as we rocked him to sleep each night.

Now at 2 and a half, we constantly get requests to play "Mudder Mudder Ocean" on the CD player :pirate:

To me, I know not how anyone could resist the emotions his songs evoke, whether it be a gladden tear for a special person or a sad one for a missed chance. Many of his songs do it to me.... from "Mother, Mother Ocean, I have heard you call, wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall"... to the "good times and riches and son of a bit**es, I've seen more than I can recall"... heck, just reading what all of you are writing here makes me cry... funny that I am listening to the Captain and the Kid as I write this. I envy those of you who had a grandfather or a father or a younger sibling to share the memories you think of...

I would think it would take a very "living life in the fish bowl" person to NOT react to his songs... but, perhaps that's because I HAVE heard the call and met all those SOB's in my life and wish I was sailing again...

I say GOOD ON YA'!! Glad to know a man that isn't afraid to say what he feels... probably won't understand this but a little envious of your wife. Perhaps, someday, I'll find my Captain... til then guess I just have to settle for being one myself...

The Captain and the Kid always made me sad before my grandpa died because it made me think about that he would be gone one day...now that he is gone....March 27, 2004......it really makes me bawl.

i have so many...but the one that hits me the hardest is "love in the library". i lived every note of that song, its like jb followed me around while he wrote what i was living. it always, ALWAYS gives me chills followed by a lump in my throat and tears down my cheeks. matter of fact, i have to ration out that song, i can't play it often, my soul will always be bruised where this is concerned. if he ever plays it in dallas just look for the slobbering baby, it'll be me. wheeew, got chills just thinking about it. (puss  ). death of an unpopular pulls at me also. the first time i heard it i just balled for some reason. its such a sad melody and the lyrics pull at my heartstrings. i think this topic is the truly the reason parrotheads are parrotheads. drinking and partying songs are fun to relieve tension and have a great time to. i love as much as anyone, but to be touched that deeply by a song is what its all about. its why i have texas plates that say PRT HED.

"Island" does it for me. Particularly the live version he played in concert back in 2000. As with many of JB's songs, the arrangements are "more full" of sound when played live.

We went to one show in Maryland and one in Virginia that year and when he played it at the first show, I immediately fell in love with it. I recorded that show off of RM and played it multiple times thereafter.

When we were at the second concert that season, I must have lost track of time (go figure) and left for the bathroom right before that song came on. I went back to the lawn to find my wife and he started playing Island. A strange sadness/panic came over me when I couldn't find my wife in time to listen to this song together with her.

OPH does it at the concerts sometimes cause it makes me so damn happy to bet there!! We always do a group hug and dance together during Pirate looks @ 40. The words to that song are so real!!! Lovely Cruise brings a tear to my eye now, I think about the past and the transitional periods of my life. It is always a happy sadness if that makes any sense at all. :-?

Come Monday holds a special place in my heart too. My hubby, a fellow PH, and l both had horrible experiences with significant others before we met. When we finally fell for each other and decided to get hitched, we planned to have this lovely Indian flute music play for the recessional. The days before the wedding were a zoo... caterer cancelled at the last minute, family fights...(You know how it goes) So, we ended up catering the thing ourselves and decorated the reception hall - listening to JB while we got ready for the big ceremony. To make a short story long, when it came time to walk back down the aisle after saying our I Do's, instead of hearing flute music JB's Come Monday comes on. Since it was a Sunday and we were leaving the next day on our honeymoon, it just seemed to make sense.

This is my first post here. Saw this thread and had to join in. Thanks for letting me be a part of your lives.

Am I the only one who got all teary eyed just reading this thread???

Come Monday always, always brings a tear of joy to my eye. And when I see it live I am overwhelmed. Arms around friends, family or strangers in a lawn or in the last row, swaying in time to the music -- I melt.

I, too, saw the Dale Earnhart tribute in NC a few years ago with "Take Another Road" and was very moved. I had never and still don't follow NASCAR, but it was a moving tribute.

My mother has been very, very ill these past two months and upon arriving at her hospital about a week into her stay, I hear the begining of "Mother, Mother Ocean..." and cried in my car in the hospital parking lot. That day we found out she could leave ICU and would make a long, slow recovery. I know the next time I hear it I'll be a mess. Let's hope I won't be going 70 on a Freeway.

Now, I have one more confession. I cry at the National Anthem on Opening Day, when someone unexpected on American Idol has a good song (or Ruben last year), at every Hallmark commercial and at almost every reveal on Trading Spaces. Yes I am a wuss. Got my emotional side from Mom, and I am proud of it!
I wanna go back to the Island...

See you in Boston, September 2nd!
