Indy camping

Post by msu#1 »

Hey,

I stayed two years ago at Sleep bear campground, I have a friend this year and she was talking about the verizon owned campground, I also noticed the 3 other "campgrounds" in the area

Has anyone ever stayed at these other places? Are they cool, get alot of parrotheads?

Verizon rarely ever opens up their campground. I think in the past---only time they have were for Dave Matthews, Phish, and SCI

I think the distance is the same between Sleepybear and Verizon, if not it's pretty close. It might be worth a call to the Verizon campground to see if they have hot showers and real (flushing) toilets. But for those prices, you could stay in a hotel and (probably) take a bus if you have 4 people. I know the Holiday Inn on the north side has a package, but I didn't look at the prices for that including the room (party and bus only was like 50-100 bucks per person). Check the rate on Sleepybear before you go too, and get it in writing or pre-pay if they'll let you.

I don't even know where the other campgrounds are, so I'm thinking that they're not within walking distance, but a few advertise shuttle service for some shows.

I know it's early to ask, but where do pholks party (Pre-tailgate) in Indy? Been to Cinci before but this will be our first in Indy. We plan to stop by Cheeseburgers In Paradise south of town for an early lunch when we arrive but where to from there? Is there a particular hotel close to Verizon? Where do particular parrotheads congregate?

There is no tailgating in Indy at the venue. At all. There are a few camprounds fairly close that will let you party there (Sleepybear is across the road from the parking lot), but it's nothing compared to Cinci. Verizon is in the middle of nowhere, so any hotel will be a drive. If you're planning on stopping at Cheeseburger, you might as well just get on one of their buses or the Indy club bus (I'll post the details on that once we officially announce it, it is just for the Thursday show and liquor will be allowed on our bus- I don't know whether that will apply to the CiP buses or not). They have a big tent party, silent auction, I think the Nace Brothers will be playing. The rumor is that JB likes to play with them. I have no idea whether that's true or not. But the food and drinks are both good, and they pretty much share a parking lot with the Courtyard, and are only a parking lot away from the Best Western and a Fairfield Inn. There's also a Comfort Inn that's just across the street from the BW.

I heard that there will be road construction pretty much right in front of Sleepy Bear. I can't find anything to confirm that, and the person I heard it from is a friend of the owner of a rival campground, so I really don't know how reliable the information is. But I thought I would let everyone know.

I'll post all of the bus details on Tuesday.

The PHINdy PHC has reserved two buses for the THURSDAY, 7/8, Jimmy Buffett concert. The cost is $25 per person and includes RT transportation to Verizon Music Center along with a goody bag and other SURPRISES (last year the Margaritaville rep gave us sample airline bottles)!! The buses will depart from Cheeseburger at approximately 4:30pm.

The deadline for payment is June 1st, HOWEVER, it is first come/first served upon receipt of payment. The buses hold a maximum of 110 people but payment must be received by 85 people to keep both buses. Money will be refunded in the event that the second bus is cancelled.

Payments can be mailed to the club post office box Post Office Box 852, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Please mak checks payabe to PHINdy Parrot Head Club.

Please direct questions about transportation to bus@phindyphc.

We have reserved blocks of rooms at the Best Western and (I think- I'll confirm tonight) Comfort Inns. The BW phone number is (317) 888-5588, and the rate we were quoted was $67 per night. The other hotel is right across the street, $60 per night, but I don't want to send people to the wrong place.

I look forward to partying with everyone!

Does that mean that the club does not have anything planned for the Tuesday show (7/6)? we're coming up for the first show and would enjoy making new phriends while getting into that island state of mind... 8)

No, we haven't made any real plans as a club for Tuesday. Cheeseburger will have a tent party and buses both days though, and that's easy enough that we'll probably end up there. I'll find out what everyone's doing, we love meeting new phriends!

Thanks for the reminder!!

Cheeseburger has significantly cut back on their phestivities this year, like they're pretty much just roping off part of their parking lot, bringing in a beer truck and margarita machine and speakers for the band inside. If I hadn't helped decide that we'd go to CiP, I'd probably go to the campground too. Although I will be at CiP just in case there's a Jimmy appearance. Kenny (the manager there) says he "expects" him to be there at some point, but after their stunt last year (they announced that he would make a surprise appearance on the news, and on the radio that he was in the kitchen), I'm not really holding my breath. Eric (the lead singer of Bahama Llama- they'll be playing at the venue before the show) is trying to get Club Trini to play Wednesday night, but I haven't heard anything about how that's going. Kenny's first reaction to that was "Who?" and the second and was that he doubted that, but that he would let Eric bug them about it (because apparently it's a huge hassle to the band to offer them a gig).

I sincerely hope everyone else has better luck with their Cheeseburger in Paradise than our club does with ours. As if what I've described above isn't enough (we had assurances from Kenny that they had planned the same thing as last year when we started planning our party in March), the service is so bad that it's someplace you go to stop drinking (there are 2 waiters, Jeff and Nate, and one bartender, Larry, that are good, the rest s***). Not a good thing in a bar.

Hey Coconuts,
How far is Sleepy Bear from CiP? We're staying at the Best Western you mentioned in your May 5th posting but we've got tickets for the July 6th show. I'm planning on stopping at CiP for lunch but if the party is scaled way back, we may want to check out the campground for phestivities. I'm assuming that the campground is closer to the venue. 8)

I was there last year, Sleepy Bear is across the street from the venue. We didn't stay overnight, it was $20/person to get in the day of the show. I'm staying at the Best Western this year too, but I'm going to the Thursday show. I do what my friend Coconuts tells me.

Not this year. I'll be at the Pittsburgh show right after Cinci and if everything falls my way here at work maybe the Thursday Chicago show the week before.

It's pretty far in Indy terms. Deer Creek is about 20 minutes north of Indy proper, and CiP is almost as far south as you can go and still be in Indy. I think it's about a 40 minute drive, but unless you're camping, the closest hotel will be 15-20 minutes away anyway (without Deer Creek traffic- with traffic after the show, you can add another hour or two to all of the times). I am pretty sure CiP (and a lot of other northside bars) will have buses, which will eliminate the 2 hour wait.

Whatever you decide, do NOT drink and drive in Hamilton County.
