Kenny Chesney - wannabe if i've ever seen one!!!

Post by Pirate Lookin' at 40 »

For starters, I know that alot of people on this forum like Chesney and So does the man himself, James Buffett. That' all fine and good. But, the bottom line is that this guy is nothing but a wannabe. Has he ever done anything original? His video for "young" (I think that's the name of the song) was a blatent ripoff of "Jack and Diane". Now all of a sudden, he's being refered to as "The Jimmy Buffett of Country Music"!!! What a load of BS!! The fact is that MOST of the people that are into the music that he is doing now, and embracing it, are Country music fans and not Parrotheads. Though some probably claim to be Parrotheads, not realizing that SYKBH is not the only piece of material that he has put out.
I've read on this and other forums that when he does "Cheeseburger in Paradise" that the crowd goes nuts. Well, I'm sure that they do. But what if he was to do "Ballad of Spider John" or "Migration" (provided that he even knows these songs)? Most of those that went nuts over CIB would probably decide that would be a good song to go to the bathroom on, or go get a beer. Then they would probably say something like, "Let's hurry and get back, Kenny might do a Buffett song." If there ever is anyone who can carry on what JB has done, which I seriously doubt, I guarantee that person is not Kenny Chesney!! KC could never come close to the storytelling abilities of JB. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a song that he has written by himself. All of his songwriting efforts that I have seen have been with other people, and those are few and far between. Someone may correct me on that, maybe. The fact is that the Parrot heads that are not into Country music agree that the guy is a joke. They laugh at any comparison between the two. For the record, I do like Country Music. However, most of todays country I do not consider to be country. KC will never be embraced by the real Parrotheads!!!

'Scuse me, but I'm a 'real' Parrothead, and I 'embrace' Kenny Chesney and his music. :-?

I really like his music and he seems like a genuine, hardworking guy. I wonder why you feel the need to be so negative about him? So maybe he's not as much of a songwriter as he is a singer.... So what? There are PLENTY of singers out there who don't write their own material.

If KC wants to be like JB, so what? Maybe KC is what Jimmy would have been if the country world had accepted him all those years ago....

Anyhow, how 'bout a little live and let live? :-?

First of all, show me one article where Kenny himself referred to himself as the next Buffett. Every interview I have ever seen or read dealing with Chesney, he offers nothing but admiration for Buffett and his legions of fans.

You can't blame Chesney if people want to draw the comparisons. It would be like hating Kobe Bryant or Tracy McGrady merely because the "experts" compare them to the immortal Jordan.

Personally, I am a huge a JB phan (owning much more than SYKBH) and can't wait for Camden and Nissan, but I am also looking forward to July 18 when I will be seeing Chesney for the first time at PNC Bank Arts Center in Jersey. And sorry to say, I pray to God that he does several Buffett covers b/c I see that as the ultimate sign of respect for JB and all of us loyal phans.

In a time in our nation's history where there is SO MUCH more to get angry and upset about, just be happy that performers like JB and KC can entertain us and make us forget about all of troubles for a couple of hours (or all day depending on what time you get there to tailgate).

God Bless and Phins UP

:-? I wish that this phrase wasn't used by so many people when talking about Parrotheads. What makes one 'real'?

I'm not a Chesney fan either but for the record "The Ballad of Spider John" is a Willis Allan Ramsay song.

I'd also be interested to know what the definition of a "real" Parrothead is. Personally, I've never cared for the term. I much prefer "Jimmy Buffett fan" but that's just me.

yeah I have to agree w/you there Jahfin....and I feel like the term is being used very poorly here....I thought when you think of a PH that you think of friendly people who like to have fun....

Im not saying you have to like KC or any other band or artist...but why bash them????guess that's my question

Here's two songs off of the top of my head that Chesney has written by himself:
I Go Back
Old Blue Chair

And just ones that I can think of right now, here's a few that he's co-written.
The Tin Man
Fall in Love
For the First Time
You Had Me From Hello
Dreams
I Can't Go There
Keg in the Closet
Being Drunk's A Lot Like Loving You

I'm not too sure what your definition of few and far between is, but I'm sure you'll agree that even JB doesn't write every single one of his songs. :pirate:

IMO, if Chesney wants to let his music show a heavy Buffett influence, let him. He could certainly do a whole lot worse

Great lil list there......Old Blue Chair is an awesome song....and "You had me from Hello"....well I'd say all you posted are awesome songs....and the songs he has nothing to do with writing, but sings, are pretty damn awesome too

believe it or not pirate 40...Jimmy Buffett does not own the beach/tropical music sound or life style. Who do you think he was influenced by...Buffett certainly wasn't the first singer/songwriter in that style...
Where would any artist be without someone to inspire them.
I love KC for more than a few reasons..one of which is because he has the same style as Buffett and lets me escape. (not to mention he is a lot better looking than Jimmy! :wench: )
I think he is an artist in his own right and really does not want TO BE Buffett.

Old Blue Chair is the best song on his new CD and I think the best song of his career thus far. And he wrote it!

Kenny Chesney is great. Seen him 3 times in concert

a real wannabe.[/quote]

In a way, aren't we all Jimmy Buffett wannabes? I know I want the laid back lifestyle, hanging out at the beach.

I don't remember reading the ophical Parrothead "rules": that we can only like Jimmy's music. I like music that makes me feel good and for me that definitely includes Kenny. I can hardly wait to see Kenny in August, right now I'm chillin' with a cold drink in my right hand.

OK. I never said that JB wrote "Ballad of Spider John". I implied that most fans at a Chesney show that recognized CIB would probably not recognize "Spider John".

I think that my point has been reinforced here by the fact that only two songs have been brought up as being wrote by KC himself. Any of us here could co write a song!

As far as what a real parrothead is. That is a good question, and probably a good topic for another discussion.

Personally, I consider myself a Parrothead. But, there are probably parrotheads out there that would be offended by my calling myself one.

The best answer is to that question is this: GO to a JB show. Take a good look around. Those who sing only to the songs on SYKBH and 5 o clock somewhere, and then just stand there in a daze during the other tunes are not the Parrotheads.

Finally, KENNY CHESNEY HAS NOT CHANGED HIS MUSICAL STYLE ONE BIT!!!!! His songwriters have changed his style for him.

KC Please just go away. (And take Tim Mcgraw and The Dixie Chicks with you)!!
