There are several close to old town that were very nice... La Concha is my favorite because it's in old town. Eden House use to be a real nice place, and so was Pier House. There are tons of bed and breakfast places in old town too...
Question... why do you want to stay in Old Town? There are several hotels that are a lot less pricey and just as nice...

I know exactly how you feel... nothing is quiet like walking in the heart of Key West.
I would then suggest Pier House. I haven't ever stayed there but it is the most famous of them all because of it's address, the pier has a perfect view for sunset and lot's of locals meet there everynight for cocktails.
I assume it has a pool, though I can't swear to it.
How old is your son this time around?
just curious...
