Hello folks, my wife and i along with another couple are heading to Chicago this august for the thursday show at the tweeter center. We are coming from Cleveland and I was hoping PHor a little help. We are staying the weekend (i've convinced my wife to let us go to Wrigley on friday.. a night of Corona followed by a day of Old Style!). But what is the best way to get from downtown to Tweeter? Should i just get a hotel downtown and make the drive or is there a bus or something that is going to the show?? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Take 80 East to 57 North. Take this to the Dan Ryan. ( also 94) Now since you are not from the area, cool way to go would be getting off at Lake Shore Drive. Take this all the way to Belmont. Take Belmont all the way to Clark Street and take a Right. Couple of blocks down you will see the Shrine.

Its prbably cheaper to stay in the burbs. There are plenty of hotels near the Tweeter Center off of I-57 & I-80. This thread has more info on hotels: http://www.buffettnews.com/forum/viewto ... c&start=20

If you stay in the city, Tweeter Center is 25 miles or so from the heart of the city, Wrigley is on the north side. You have easy public transporation (trains etc) if you stay in the city and go to Wrigley. Limo or driving to the Tweeter Center would be your only feasable options for the show.

If you stay by the Tweeter Center, you have a nice drive along the lake to Wrigley, plenty of parking around. Wouldn't recommend public transporation if you stayed out this way.

You really didn't just say "plenty of parking" around Wrigley. parking there sux the biggest one.

Western Suburb hotel/motel would be my suggestion. Take Metra or the O'Hare line into the city for the Cubs (transfers required, don't ask me exactly) Then zip down the Tri-state for Tinley

BTW, Gumby's directions were from Tweeter to Wrigley, not downtown to Tweeter. Reverse his directions starting with the Dan Ryan Xpressway and that will get you to Tweeter.

Wrigley is in a neighborhood not especially conducive to lots of game day cars unless you want to pay a lot to park. take public transportation to the game-it's all I've ever done.

Don't know of any busses from downtown to Tweeter, certainly nothing in public transportation.

Well the way I mentioned you will get to drive a majority of Lake Shore Drive and get to see some more of the City.

not criticizing your directions, gumby-any drive along LSD is worth doing, but the question was downtown to Tweeter-that's not what you gave him.

I would suggest taking a metra (commuter) train downtown and then taking the red line up to the ballpark. It would definitely be a great way to "experience" Chicago and the Cubs game. Here's the links to the trains:

http://www.transitchicago.com/

Otherwise, driving into the city isn't that bad of an idea... it can be a hassle though. And if you don't know where you're going, finding parking could make you cry. I live in city and I'd never drive to the ballpark... or at least I'll never tell you where my secret hiding parking spot is!!!

Gumby won't get mad at you-unless you start complaining about not getting tickets!!  :D

Use Gumby's directions. I can verify parking will be a b*tch around Wrigley, but if you'e never been on Lake Shore Drive, there's nothing like the first time you see it...still takes my breath away. Just get there way early and check out some bars and stuff around the "friendly confines", always a festive mood around Wrigley before a game. Hotels will be cheaper out by Tweeter....but....they may be all booked by this time, you'll have to check around. Matteson is also not far from Tweeter. Also if you stay out by Tweeter, you'll have a better chance of meeting other Parrotheads.
Just my $0.02 :D

what to do...

Perhaps a hotel at a point between the field and tweeter.
I would use Sir Gumby's directions, only in reverse from Downtown to Tweeter. So after the game you head to the hotel which is then part way to the theater. Only reason I suggest it is that the hotels near the theater may already be booked up for those days. Don't know, haven't checked.

take the train!

the last two years I have gone into downtown from Tinley and its taken over 2 hours to get back to the hotel in the afternoon. That may seem like the norm for Chicago, but I think that Friday afternoons are a bit worse...I'll be going to see the Cubs between the shows and I think the metra will be a must this year.

Parking is one of the biggest problems with the cubs. The fri game is at 2:20. Just enjoy. Jimmy has been known to sing during the 7th inning. You might get lucky. Do you have tickets? If not The scalpers are waiting for you. Parking can run up to $50. Next door. tickets more than that. Good luck.

Having lived just a mile from Wrigley for 17 years I agree with everyone that the parking is terrible but can be had for a price. A little easier for weekday games than evenings or weekends. Another problem is that I believe there is going to be major construction on the Dan Ryan this summer If you stay downtown I would definitely take the red line to the ball game and drive to the concert. Wherever you stay I would allow at least 1 & ½ hours minimum travel time either from the city to Tinley or from Tinley to Wrigley. Have a great time.
