If you've never been to Great Woods...
Then you just don't get it. I know I'm beating a dead horse, but a Buffett concert is as much about the tailgating as it is the concert. That's a fact that the majority of "Real" Parrotheads will admit. Does it mean that we don't appreciate the music? No, we love the music, that's what drew us to JB in the first place. But, we also look forward to our Labor Day blowout with 20,000 of our closest friends in RV's and buses with pools, sand, dancing and cruising the parking lot for 8-10 hours trying to find friends from years past. This is what a Buffett show means to me and so many others and that's why we're p***. To go from that to Fenway where you'll be lucky to muscle your way into a bar to get a beer is laughable and that's why I'm not going.
For all of the non-New Englanders out there, come to Great Woods next year to see for yourself. Methinks that those PH's in Cincy, C. Falls, Texas and wherever else that tailgating is frowned upon have NO IDEA what they're missing and therefore have NO IDEA why we're so bummed out up here.
And as far as JB playing solely for his boyhood kicks and to be only the second person to play Fenway, remember money talks. 70,000 tix at $80 a pop for two nights equals a hell of a lot more than 40,000 tix at an average of $50 at Great Woods. I love the guy, but the marketing of Margaritaville is getting out of hand.
P.S.--The Springsteen show at Fenway kicked ass in my opinion. Though I went for the concert, not a tailgating experience. Having said that, Fenway was not made for concerts and let's hope that this is the last of it.

April 29, 2004 11:05 pm EST "We'll always have Great Woods. But when you get a chance to play the Taj Majal, The Great Wall of China, or Fenway, you do it!" Steve ~ RadioMargaritaville
This paraphrased what Steve Huntington said after Thurday night's show... I don't think he needs to make excuses, but to me, that's pretty solid reasoning.
All of the bitching and whining in the world won't bring Buffett to Great Woods this Labor Day. But what if you p*** him off enough to make him end the legacy forever?
So many people are being so self-centered over the whole situation it's rediculous! It's not about you... it's about Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band... their goals, their dreams, and their decision on what is best and most fulfilling to their amazing career. They don't go out in the lot and tailgate with everyone, so that's not what's most important to them.
Fenway Park is legendary. Nuff said. If you're a fan, you have the choice to accept it, improvise, and go with it; or decline it and pout. But for the sake of everyone listening, get over it already, drop it, and move on.

Re: Even a possibility???
I don't think so, Vicki. Great Woods has contracted its parking lot on Labor Day weekend to the PGA golf tour next door to GW. Sorry (as we all are)VickilovesJimmy wrote:Does anyone think that there is even a remote possibility that he'll do great woods too?
I just can't bear to think that there will be no labor day weekend show this year!

Re: Even a possibility???
I was at the Tampa shows and although it's not announced officially yet, one of the tour t-shirts shows Pittsburgh for 9/2 and Jones Beach for 9/4 so if it's tailgatin' you want, it looks like Jones Beach is the place this year.
As for Fenway I'm personally excited. I love that place and the Sox as much as JB and given how much he wanted to play there, I am expecting two amazing performances above and beyond his usual over-the-top effort for Great Woods. I'm going to take advantage of Fenway being on the subway line and not have to worry about driving home.

You should be made fun of.

Hi there. Lively debate, eh?
I do not have any inside information about tours in 2005 or beyond. Many times you at Buffett News know stuff before I do. I was just trying to provide some perspective on this year's New England shows. Sorry if anyone was insulted, but you should see some of these emails. Actually, this message board provides the varied opinions, so you're getting the idea.
I'm no fonder of stadium concerts than most other people. I've heard both sides of the Springsteen Fenway critique, and my least favorite (though still awesome) Bruce shows in his history were the stadiums. Or is that stadia? But I love going to Fenway for Red Sox games, and I can't wait to see the spectacle of a Jimmy Buffett concert there. If form holds, the people at the show are every bit as much fun as what's on the stage.
I figure Jimmy knows how special Great Woods is (he's said so many times). And how important tailgating is. Just watch the video at the show. I'm guessing, as I've said, that one would do Fenway Park this time because one can. The opportunity may never come again, or may never be sought again. I don't know.
And in the end everyone will do what they want to do. Go, or not go and wait for the next go 'round. I sure am glad he's putting them out on Radio Margaritaville to "be there" from anywhere. There's no one else doing that.

Steve,
Thanks for stopping by BN and posting your comments (yes folks it really was Steve posting the message).
I look forward to seeing Jimmy at Fenway, but I'll really miss the tailgating. I also don't like the stadium shows unless I right in front of the stage.
Hopefully I'll get to met you at Fenway.
Jim

I think Steve and Radio Margaritaville should schedule a little sit down for an interview with JB discussing this whole Fenway Pahhhk / no Great Woods thing. I'll bet with some advance notice and word of mouth being what is, it could be (not really sure how one would measure this) one RM's highest rated segments. There sure are a lot of PO'd PHeds.
Another thing that just dawned on me... If I was to drink as much booze at one of the upcoming Fenway shows as I typically do in Mansfield, well let's just say I might have to tap into the home equity line to pay for it!!
