I can't remember who was playing at the same time but I'm thinking it may of been either Tim Easton or J.D. Van Zandt (son of Townes) on the songwriter's stage. I enjoyed both Tift's and Caitlin's performances as well. Unfortunately there's been very little to excite me about this years line up so far. At least the Gourds will be there.conched wrote:I too saw him at ACL Festival. He had the crowd!!! I thought he was pretty amazing. I caught only part of it too. Seems like I was trying to catch some of Tift Merritt or Caitlin Cary performance.Jahfin wrote:I caught part of his set at the Austin City Limits Music Festival last year. From what little I heard, his music didn't do much for me but from the interviews I've read and seen with him in recent years he seems like a nice fella, his music just isn't my cup of chowder.
ACL Musicfest is music overload, but so energizing!!!

What a great thread....
Being a San Diego boy, and a longboard surfer, I have come to know Jack's music.
All of you have it right, Jack is no Jimmy per se, but he has style that will take him far. As much as I am a fan, I dd not know the Jimmy connection, or the Pirate 40 cover. I will look for it on the web, or wherever.

I've got no problem with Jack Johnson. I have a few of his live shows and I have On and On. I listen to them on occasion...they're not bad. I have always questioned how much is made of Jack's interest in Buffett. I went to his site a while back and didn't see anything about Buffett in places I thought I'd see.
I mean, if Buffett doesn't make this long list of groups/singers he digs, then I have to question just how big an influence Buffett really was.[/quote]Q: Who are some of your (musical) influences?
A: I dig Nick Drake, The Beatles, Hendrix, Tribe Called Quest, Dylan, Ben Harper, Radio Head, G. Love and Special Sauce, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Marley, Kurosawa, Tom Curren and so on.

Funny enough, I actually discovered Jack Johnson when I was reading the July 2003 issue of Men' Journal which featured Jimmy on the cover. There was also an article in the same issue about Jack Johnson. I read the article, he sounded pretty cool, I went out and bought his CD's and pretty much listen to them non-stop right along with Jimmy. Jack is great summertime cookout, all the friends over, hanging out music. The type of music you can put on and no one bitches. Brushfire Fariytales and On and On are both great albums.
Here is the issue I am referring to:

And here is a pretty good size piece of the article from Men's Journal:

And here is a good one Sports Illustrated did on Jack a while back:

Stood up and tried to focus,
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far.
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary,
So I stumbled next door to the bar.

I've told the story here before, but it warrants being told here again...
I saw Jack in Phoenix last August (the show is actually on Archive.org, download it to hear my story). A couple Parrothead buddies and I were lucky enough to stand against the stage, and as luck would have it, close enough to influence Jack's choice of tunes. During a lull between songs toward the end of his set, we screamed for him to play APLAF and he obliged! You can hear Jack on that recording going, "this is for the Jimmy Buffett fans down front". He went on to sing the song, forgetting the start of a couple verses, which we were able to help him out with. All in all one of the best concert experiences for me.

I don't know if there is any truth to the rumor, but I heard Jack's Dad is good friends with JB, and Jack grew up with JBs influence and guidance...can anyone confirm?
I saw Jack play live at the Greek Theatre in Berkley last summer and he played the cover...it was insane live!!!
