Here is a link to a list of the 898 people that have died over oil under the Bush administration.

A couple of points. In 2001, Bu$h proposed the closing of military bases in an attempt to save money to modernize the military, which is exactly what Clinton did. I also find it odd that this appeared in a Dec. 2003 story in USA Today, "Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld strongly opposes increasing the size of the military on the grounds that the services are not efficiently using the personnel they already have, and increasing the number of troops is enormously expensive." You would have thought that had Clinton ravaged our forces as the right wing has claimed, that Bu$h would answered with an increase.

Ok Mr. Anti War, if the war was over oil, why are prices over 2.50 a gallon. Seems to me that if we were trying to get thier oil, it would be cheap. We would be bathing in oil. Think before you insult our country.

It certainly wasn't a part of the "war on terror".

Numbers posted on the internet are fun, but of little value. What would be more interesting are numbers attributed to facts and/or those numbers in context.

I mean, I'd be curious to see (assuming SOME of those numbers border on truthful) how many of the reductions were as a result of anti-ICBM treaties, military consolidation, and post-cold-war reductions. An interesting comparison would also be a comprehensive list of personel cuts, weapons program eliminations and funding cuts under Reagan and Bush I, since the years immediately following the Cold War saw a massive reduction in the military supported not by the Dems but by folks like (gasp!) Cheney.

I searched for the fun of it and while I find that passage all over the net, not once is it annotated to allow you to actually see the data. Makes me suspect when NO ONE has a source. It also makes me concerned that people in this country are so uncuroius that they believe every thing they get emailed.

But then, Bill Gates is going to send me $50 if I forward this post to all my friends....

I'm not attacking you, but I hardly find the amounts of dead soldiers to be "fun." Maybe that's just me.

I'm referring to the numbers in the original post.

I knew for sure when I saw the "aircraft carriers" that counted out Australia ...

odd as it may sound, and for a country with the coastline we have, we do not have a single aircraft carrier in our Naval Fleet :-?

It got de-commissioned in approx 1980 - 1981.

My brother was in service on it and the family was invited out for the last voyage.

So, my parents, my sister and myself, all went to sydney for the day and out on the Melbourne. We had a great day!! coming back in through the Sydney Heads on the main deck of the Melbourne was just AWESOME!!!

I was actually sitting on the front of the ship, legs dangling over the edge as we sailed back in to Sydney ...

as a 17-18yo, not sure what scenery I liked best - that on the ship or the Harbour

Well, when I sailed into Sydney Harbour in 1978 aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma City as a SINGLE 26 year old, I remember not only the trip into the harbour as being beautiful, but the ~VERY~ beautiful sights I saw when I got off the ship as well. :D

Yes, MA'AM, I had one of the greatest times of my life! Many thanks to your fellow countrymen AND WOMEN!
but DAMN, I wish I would have stayed away from King's Cross

I was only 14 then

I think around that time, some US navy ships came in to Newcastle Harbour, and my family hosted some of them for Christmas dinner .... I remember being devastated when they had to leave, as I had the BIGGEST crush on them

And WE had the biggest crush on you ladies, Jenny.
I was there in MAY of 1978, so I wouldn't have been one of those young rakes you had over for dinner. However, in every port I visited (Sydney/Newcastle, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, and Perth/Fremantle), they were ALL so gracious and hospitable to all of us, and did everything but adopt us. It may sound trivial to read about it in type, but when you have hundreds of people throwing their arms around you and welcoming you into their homes, practically GIVING you their homes, it's not something you soon forget.
How can I forget ANYPLACE where I'm at for a total of 32 days, and spend a grand total of $37.00?
Believe me, Jenny-I think about those days EVERY DAY!
To you, your countrymen AND WOMEN-THANK YOU!
and on the eighth day, God created the people of Australia
