Austin City Limits On DVD

Post by Jahfin »

I see no mention of this on the New West Records web site but in the new issue of No Depression magazine (which is devoted to alt.country music, whatever that is :D ) they have an ad about Austin City Limits coming to DVD. I enjoyed seeing the more recent (80s) Buffett show from ACL when it aired on CMT not so long ago but what I'd really like to see is the one he did for them way back in the 70s. Hopefully, all episodes of the show will be getting the DVD treatment.

This would be most cool. So many of these shows (radio and tv) are setting on gold mines if they could ever find a way (i.e. money for promotion, distribution) to get shows to the masses. Could you imagine how hot a DVD containing JB's NBC Today Show appearances would be?

Or a 2-DVD set of ACL of the 70s and 80s shows?

And its not just JB. There are fans of other artists and other shows that are just as rabid as we Parrotheads (I know, I know, its hard to imagine, but true).

Of course, I already gave the ACL show the DVD treatment. Imported it via miniDV into my Mac and burned a DVD :-) There's a bit of quality loss, but not much.

One of the shows I'd most like to see again is the Earl Scruggs Revue. They also made an album out of their appearance when they were on Columbia Records back in the 70s. Sadly, it has been out of print for years and has never been released on CD.

I have two Austin City Limits DVDs. One is Stevie Goodman and the other is Roy Orbison....both excellent.

I would love more of this kind of stuff. They have some cds out of blues and country.

Did you see the recent article about Apple iTunes new mission? Their director of music programming (Alex Luke, I think) and Steve Jobs say they want to collect and make available every piece of recorded music! They are most interested in offering live recordings and out of print gems.

Obviously, this is an impossible dream, but it will be interesting to see what they can accomplish. They've already accomplished some high profile catalog coups. Apple is now offering the first 45 Motown singles (many of which can't be found today - even on CD) and 45 rare Motown albums. And the Grateful Dead is also said to digitizing their entire live library to offer via iTunes.

I think as online music catches on and artists and record labels realize the cost of distribution/promotion is much cheaper, we'll start to see these hard-to-find pieces make a comeback. The article said only about 1/3 of all recorded music is available to consumers at any given time. Motown estimated more than 90% of their catalog is unavailable.

Mailboat, Jimmy, MCA - are you listening????
