People Who Just Don't Get It

In another thread, someone posted the BN saying about how some get it and some don't. While this was refering to a newspaper reviewer, it got me to thinking about the people in my life who just don't get it. Don't get me wrong; these are loved ones: They're family and friends, but they have one flaw: They just don't get it! I think we've all been there before: From the times that we hear them say, "You're going where to see who?" to "Didn't you just see him" to "Don't you already have one of his CD's; why do you need another one?"
So, what are some of your favorite stories of loved ones who just don't get it? I've got a few that I can think of, and I'll start by sharing two:
The first one was when I was talking to my 70 year old grandmother, and I told her about my plans to road trip to see JB in late August. Here's how the conversation went:
Her: Who is it you're going to see?
Me: Jimmy Buffett
Her: He's not the same one you saw in July, is it?
Me: No, that' s him!
Her: Oh, well, he's not the same one you saw in February, is it?
Me: No, that's him too!!
Her: (speechless)
The second one was when I was listening to the Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday version of Margaritaville. Right after the line, "Smell those shrimp beginning to boil," I blurt out "Bubble, Bubble, Bubble, Bubble!" I was just a split second ahead of Jimmy on the "Bubble Bubble" part, and then JB of course does the "Bubble Bubble" line. My mother was in the room, and she looked stunned that I knew what he was about to say! She goes, "Man, you don't like him now, do you?"

It's the same with a few of my friends and co-workers. "You already saw him once this year...aren't all the concert the same anyway." what's really bad is a totally true comment: "How many times can you actually sit out in a steaming parking lot during the sumer for 7 hours???"

I got my last set of concert tickets (Lauderdale) sent to my parents house in St. Petersburg (I'm a college student, and haven't had the time to change my permanent address to Boca Raton) and she opened them, called me immediately wanting to know why i had spent $75 dollars on tickets when i was broke to begin with, and then later couldn't understand how i didn't have enough money to come home after the show (what can i say, getting "ready" and tailgating cost a couple bucks), and had to wait for a paycheck just to have enough money for gas. My dad gets it though, as he is the one who turned me on to Jimmy in the first place when i was 6. Mom also probably won't get why i will take a week off of school and work to head to keys for the annual convention

If my Nana were still around, she'd get it. Or at least she'd give it a thumbs up because it's important to me.
I think my dad might sorta get it; he at least silently cheers me on in my travels.
My mother's first name means "warrior with a spear"...... she doesn't get it.... 'nuff said.....
My siblings do NOT get it. They grew older AND grew up.....BORING!! (Although my one sister sorta gets it, and her husband cheers me on all the time. Just to p*ss off my sibs, he'll ask "where's the next show?" right in front of them.....

)
two of my favorite words:
ROAD TRIP!!!!!
later, dudes and dudettes!

AHHHHH HAAAAAA!
My co-workers just laugh . . . they don't get it.

Especially since I'm not going to the Dallas concert (the one that's the closest to me.
My Dad, though . . . . he gets it! He rearranged his late Spring travel plans so I could go to the Denver concert.
Woo Hoo!
Do we really care who gets it?

Funny this thread should come up now. I experienced this just last night. I was putting the finishing touches on my portable tiki bar. My wife says "I can't believe you spent that much time building that thing for just one day at a concert." The thought in my mind was "Yeah I guess the time would've been much better spent in my recliner, watching American Idol......"

This morning the Gardener's Journal program had a show with a guy who made a tropical looking garden complete with tiki bar in his Canadian back yard. My husband saw me watching intently and said something like Oh God No! I'm not going to have to carve a tiki for you am I??
I just smiled and said I was sure I could find one on ebay...

That has happened to me at work, too.

By now, most people in my office just think of me as "that silly Parrothead."
My parents are always amazed at how much money I spend on tickets. When I told them we were going to the Charlotte concert, my dad's reply was, "Aren't all the shows the same? Why do you need to go to more than one?"

My mom seems to think I'm just going through a phase....you'd think after 11 years, she'd realize it's a little more than that.
The response from most other people in my family, when I talk about Buffett is "Who?"

my wife kinda gets it.. she loves who i am because of it..she loves the concerts and the tailgating but asks me to play something else once in a while ( thats when Jim Morris comes on

) what i like best is when you tell people they just don't get it.. that look of puzzlement.. like what don't i get?? i brought a friend to jones beach one year and he told me every concert here tailgates, no biggie..ahhh ignorance.. he left that night a believer, and a parrothead for life..i kinda like that some people don't get it.. i like having something over people.. i chuckle and walk away letting them wonder

My family doesn't quite get it, but they're working on it. Columbus was my parents' first show, they loved it. My grandmother volunteers for the local hospice's secondhand store- 2 years ago, she found an 8 track of You Had To Be There and gave it as a "gag" gift. I was pretty happy with it!

My husband doesn't get it:
1. Why do you listen to Buffett ALL the TIME?
2. All his songs sound the same.
3. Why would you want to go to another concert - they're all the same?
4. Why would you want to go to more than 1 concert per year?
5. Why would you want to go to more than 1 concert in a week?
6. Why would you want to listen to the concerts on RM?
7. Why do you want cd's of different concerts when they sound the same?
8. Why do you find it necessary to walk around in a Geeky Bar?
9. Why was it necessary to carve a Jimmy Buffett Tiki pole?
10. You're warping our children!
Most of my family doesn't get it:
Mom: Oh JoAnn, be careful!
Sisters: Mostly a lot of

Although my middle sister actually told me last week, "you're not wierd, I've just gotten too old for all that excitement."
Brothers: All of them play guitar, and appreciate the music and having a good time, although they haven't been to see Jimmy recently. Middle brother is "old school", who used to go see Jimmy in Chicago bars, and then bigger venues, in "the old days" before they made up the name "parrot heads". He sadly grew older and up, but he's still got it inside him, and I need him to come with me to a show.
My friends don't all get it, but some do, and the others are totally amused!

We had awesome people in our row Saturday night who shared nicely

and were a lot of fun. As we were walking to our car afterwards, we saw the guy who sat (stood, actually) next to my husband. He had to drive right past our I-75 exit to get to his house and we invited him to drop in on his way home Sunday. Now, we didn't really expect him to, but it was an offer from one happy PH to another!
He commented that the majority of people would never dream of doing that - inviting a stranger to their home - because they don't "get it"! I get it and am soooooo glad I do - it makes life gooooood!!

My family (and hubby's) and most of our friends didn't really get it. I think it finally sunk in with some of them after the wedding...and we may have a few converts.
When we announced to our family that we were getting married at the concert, hubby's stepdad sent us a nasty e-mail calling our wedding a stunt, and blah blah blah blah blah.
We went ahead with it anyway. By the end of the night (of course this may just have been the margaritas speaking), everyone told us what a great and fun wedding it was and that they finally understood--even the step-dad.
As for my maid of honor (who is also PHAWs cousin)...she explained that PHAW had "Jimmy Buffett parties and everything which is kind of extreme". I just smiled and said, "It sure is...
