I just don't see where the "change" is since country has always been part of his sound. As for change itself, I welcome it as his sound has been changing and evolving all along (though I prefer his earlier material to the majority of the newer stuff). I'm also not sure what's meant by "Buffett-type" songs or that "his message is getting around". As far as I know Buffett doesn't own a patent on mixing Carribean and country influences and this isn't the first time he's had songs on the charts. Long before now there were island flavored songs on the radio that weren't by Jimmy Buffett.wanderingtoes wrote:It is a great question for discussion, only time will tell. Right now it seems like it will be new, different, maybe even a little fun. I don't think anyone would want Jimmy to change too much, but change may be good for him. There have been quite a few Buffett type songs on the charts in the past few years so JB's message is getting around. I prefer the Island feel in his songs and I don't think traditional country can make that happen, so whatever we see in the future I hope it has some water, boats, and tequila in it.

Seriously though, nobody's talking down to you. In fact, I was mostly in agreement. I don't like country music much, and I don't suppose I'll like this new album much... but it doesn't bother me that he's doing what he's doing. He's at a point that he can make a statement or collaborate with anyone he damn well pleases (with the exception of Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand) and it makes no difference to me. And that is the same way I'd feel if I were more of a country fan too.
Tryin' to reason is right... no need to come to a consensus on anything and there's nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing either!

I'm not a big fan of country music, maybe because we don't have a country radio station in NYC and I don't get CMT on my cable system, but I'm looking forward to the new CD. I liked Coast of Carolina when Jimmy played it at Charlotte, I never liked the Dead but I like his version of Scarlet Begonias and Boats To Build is a great song. I've heard maybe 6 songs from the new CD and I'd say the title track is probably my least favorite so far.

And how in the world do you expect any of us to be able to comment on a CD that isn't in the stores as yet. If anyone berated or talked down to anyone it is you talking down to those of us that posted.[/quote]
I said from the songs people have heard... That is all I was asking... Thanks to those that have helped... I have not been to a concert yet this season so I have not heard the songs that have been blocked by radiomargaritaville. This thread was never meant to be such a big deal. I am not saying jimmy does not have the right to do what he wants. I never said that. Just was talking about my personal taste. If I had something against him I would not be going to four concerts this summer. I just wanted to know what to expect from the new songs.
I never said I knew everything there is to know about jimmy but I have read probably everything most of you have read. I do consider myself a big fan. Never claimed to be an expert. One problem with posting on these boards is that tone can't be taken into account. I read a post that said basically people like me where complaining or something like that and that was not my intention.

I guess me saying that I am struggling with it was a bad choice of words. All I meant was that I don't think I will like it as much. Maybe that was the problem with this thread. He can sing with JayZ for all I care or he could, god forbit, quit right now... he has earned the right to do what he wants.iuparrothead wrote:Whoooaaaa there cowboy!!! Your original post did not state "from the songs people have heard" and you came accross on you second post as being somewhat hostile for those comments that were already made. Sorry for the miscommunicationcabinfever wrote:I said from the songs people have heard... That is all I was asking... Thanks to those that have helped... It's all good. No worries. People takes things out of context here all the time...we just all have to be cool about it, which you seem to be. Still, to me, I don't think it will make a difference what he sounds like this summer. Now as far as singing with Jay-Z... I mean, I personally love H.O.V.A., but I don't think I'd be down with that!!!cabinfever wrote:I guess me saying that I am struggling with it was a bad choice of words. In fact, my favorite cd was Jimmy's country CD!
When I heard Alan and Jimmy together, it seemed

artists come together! Now my favorite song
is 5 oclock somewhere! What could be better than
that! I think country rocks and you have no power to
diss that! (please don't take any offense off of this)

To me, today's country sounds like top 40 radio. Copy the style, shove it into the market, then go away to the next artist recycles.
CMT looks like VH-1 for country. Then again, this is part of MTV networks. Lame. Boring. No substance. Same program wheel. ZZZZ. People Magazine format. On the other hand these are the same companies that swallowed up the radio dial and play the same crap. So basic cable follows the same destiny. Long live college free form radio.

"What goes around comes around" say wise men in bars. Any good artist feels compelled to change, if not doomed to change, and vary his art as much as he varies his life. Starting from the center, Buffett has shot off to a number of usual and unusual planets. Now in *** we see him coming home not quite on A1A, but with the same richness of feeling that informed much of his earlier work.
"Years ago, down in Riviera Beach in southeast Texas, I saw some cowboys ride into town on horseback for a dinner of GULF shrimp and oysters. If you were Superman you could have seen Key WESTERN off there in the distance. This album has a musical range expanding in an arc from Bob Wills to Bob Marley with the Gulf somehow always there: a low and high tidal range, sweet and piney like the Delta soil, Caribbean Islands white with coral dust, ladies as moist and sweet as a fresh broken conch. Rather than return, Buffett is starting out from the center again, with a vast expansion both musically and emotionally. The music is a triumph for an American sound. " - Jim Harrison
*** = "Riddles in the Sand" (1984)

I think I'm not going to rush out and by this album right away, I dont like the duets I've heard already either. Usually when someone does a duet on an album its one not nine. Some of those country guys got that twang going that I dont care for and some I've never heard sing a note so I'll just wait to hear some before I plunk down my $. I bet it does well in the country world.
Believe, Be Light, Be Love.........p.mayer
Even though I'm not really fond of some of the artists involved, I'm not so sure I understand some of the logic here. So, some of you are suddenly going to decide to jump ship just because Buffett has decided to do an all-star duets album (Santana, anyone?)? I also see a lot of folks that seemed to of already made up their mind about the album and it hasn't even been released yet. I mentioned this in another section of the message board but I realize this album was something Buffett had in mind before 5 O'Clock Somewhere became a hit but to say the making and marketing of the new album hasn't been informed by the success of that single would be a severe oversight. For whatever reason, he seems to be trying to strike while the iron is still hot. He already sells out nearly all of his shows everywhere he plays so he has nowhere to go but up. Is it a sell-out move on his part? To an extent, I'd say it is but I'm not going to hold it against him because he's the one calling the shots, not us. Another thing that baffles me is all the people that act like Buffett has never enjoyed any chart success before. Perhaps some have forgotten that he had quite a bit of success in that regard back in the 70s when he first rose to prominence. Sometimes I find the whole notion of him "selling out" now as kind of funny because I remember some friends of mine sitting around accusing him of the same thing when Livingston Saturday Night appeared on Son of a Son of a Sailor with altered lyrics from the version that originally appeared on Rancho Deluxe (I'm referring to the dropping of the "whorehouse on the edge of town" line). I think we all know this new album has all the makings of being one of his biggest successes since his glory days back in the 70s and with that, if that's what he's shooting for, I hope it is, whatever his reasons may be.

I don't think that's an example I'd use. I think Santana's last 2 albums where he did duets with just about everybody in the world except me both sucked. In my opinion he tried to be all things to all people and while it's true he won a ton of Grammys the music was mediocre at best.Jahfin wrote:So, some of you are suddenly going to decide to jump ship just because Buffett has decided to do an all-star duets album (Santana, anyone?)?

A poor example maybe but it's the first thing that came to mind. The big difference being apparently not every track on License to Chill features a guest artist.LIPH wrote:I don't think that's an example I'd use.
