I know that I am going to enjoy the shows I goto but.... I really don't like the country artists. Can someone tell me if the new stuff is overpowered by the country feel?

Let's not forget that Jimmy started in country. This morning I heard Alan Jackson say that the reason so many country artists embrace Buffett is because as they are on their rise to fame they have to play honkey tonks where Buffett's music is always requested. Consequently, there is a large amount of country musicians that have a deep respect for his music.

I guess I'll never get this thing people have against Buffett showcasing his roots in country on the upcoming album. Then again, I haven't heard it so I don't know how "country" it is but it's not like the country influence is something new to his music; A White Sportcoat and a Pink Crustacean is a play on the Marty Robbin's song A White Sportcoat and a Pink Carnation, Why Don't We Get Drunk (and Screw) is a commentary of sorts on Conway Twitty's Let's Go All The Way, the pedal steel guitar, the mandolin and other instruments associated with country have longed played a part in his music. Even when he did his last "country" album (Riddles In The Sand) I don't think he let his country influences dominate the proceedings. This goes back to the early albums as well, he usually strikes a balance between all of his influences (not just country) to come up with what he once described on You Had to Be There as "Jimmy BuffettdrunkenCarribeanRocknRollmusic".

Well said Jahfin.

I think everyone needs to "Chill" here. You haven't even heard the album yet. If Kenny Chesney's last album was any indication, maybe Buffett has influenced some of these artists to leave their country roots and take a wayward trip to the islands. Ever think about that?

And what about Scarlet Begonias? Buffett's version (at least the live ones that I've heard) have ROCKED. They make the Dead's version sound like Hot AC.

Give it a chance folks. :-)

Go grab one of Steve Earle's or Jim Lauderdale's records, they're still making the kind of country music I enjoy, they (and many others like them) just refuse to kiss Nashville's ass in order to sell more albums.

Short version: No, I'm not struggling with it.

Long version: My musical tastes are all inclusive.

I started listening to the local country station again last summer to listen to Five O'Clock Somewhere, as well as watching CMT for the video. Since then, I tune in to US99 and CMT more than the rock stations and VH1 that were my favorites.

If there are more of us out there like me, the country industry owes Jimmy a thank you for bringing his phans to them.

I have always been VERY open to many different types of music... if NOT you miss alot of REALLY GREAT music!! 15yrs ago I was listening to alternative music BEFORE they had alternative radio channels(which are anything but alternative)

Country is the same way... whats on the radio is NOT the best that can be found. :D

As far as Jimmy embracing his country roots... people have been screaming for years for Jimmy to make more music like A1A, Havana Daydreamin... WELL "LTC" maybe as close to the vintage Buffett as you get...

Lets wait to hear the new music before condemning it... OK.
Open your mind... you might get turned on to something NEW!

Talking about the merits of country music isn't going to change the opinion of someone who doesn't like that kind of music.

I am not much of a country music fan and giving me a history lesson on it isn't going to change my mind, BUT I'm not bothered or disturbed by Jimmy recording a more "country" album and performing with a more country flavor. If that's what he wants to do than great! I don't expect JB to record and perform to my tastes and expectations.

I don't get why someone would take offense to my post? It was really a question about the songs people have heard off of the new album. I know jimmy's history, I don't need a history lesson. I was just curious. Good music is good music I just don't like country music.... Jimmy style mixed in with his country roots is fine... I was just wondering because of all the other artists on this new cd does it (from what people have heard) feel like a buffett CD or like a country CD with some jimmy mixed in. Just a question... If I wanted a history lesson I would have asked, "so has jimmy done country music before?". I come here to talk about jimmy and be happy not be talked down to or berated because I don't like something. Sorry that I am not just like you..

I don't see where anyone talked down to you or berated you at all. We do a much better job at that then what is shown here.

Everyone expressed their opinions. You also need to realize that there are those who are on the boards that are new to Buffett so maybe the history here is of interest to them. Are ou saying that you know all there is to know about Buffett??

And how in the world do you expect any of us to be able to comment on a CD that isn't in the stores as yet. If anyone berated or talked down to anyone it is you talking down to those of us that posted.

I'm not a huge fan of most hte country acts going, I love jerry jeff walker, lyle lovett and a few others like them. Obviously there's a little bit of country in Jimmy's music although the country roots being referred to and the country music of today are quite a bit different. How many crossover country/pop songs have there been in recent years... too many to count.

So far what I've heard off the new album hasn't impressed me, not because I don't like Jimmy playing country, I just am not impressed with the music, however I hope there will be some gems on the new album, I'll leave my judgement on it open until I hear the full album.

I, too, don't like country music, will never like country music, and don't see why anyone has the right to tell me to "give it a try, you may like it."
I have been on this earth MANY years, and I ain't about to have a revelation regarding country music and embrace it with a passion.
I WILL probably buy the CD, because I DO like Jimmy and just about everything he does, but I'm not crazy about the fact that I'll be buying the musical talents of others I have no interest in.

I agree that BN exists so we can gather info on Buffett-related matters and express our opinions, but there is absolutely no need to reach a consensus on any issue, other than that professional scalpers are bad people. Nor is there any reason to believe one opinion is "better" or more enlightened than another. It's the diversity of the pholks here that make it interesting!!

First round's on me!!

It is a great question for discussion, only time will tell. Right now it seems like it will be new, different, maybe even a little fun. I don't think anyone would want Jimmy to change too much, but change may be good for him. There have been quite a few Buffett type songs on the charts in the past few years so JB's message is getting around. I prefer the Island feel in his songs and I don't think traditional country can make that happen, so whatever we see in the future I hope it has some water, boats, and tequila in it.
