Well, Canal's the border of the French Quarter, but it depends on what the cross street is. I haven't been down there for 2-3 years, so I don't remember where it is exactly. If it's Canal and Tchoupitalis, I think it was pretty decent.
Just a word of caution- most of the doorways are recessed, so an "empty" street may or may not really be empty. Be careful, and try to stay in the busier parts whenever possible.

The Days Inn on Canal is a bit of a walk to the FQ and is not the most desirable of areas. If you don't want to spend the dough to stay in the quarter I would recommend finding a hotel in the CBD area. You can usually find good deals in the area between Poydras and Canal, and it's a relatively safe area to walk. The hotels by the convention center are also nice.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions, as a frequent visitor to Nola I may have more to offer.

We will definitely pack the pistol then! I have heard horror stories from the people I work with about how dangerous parts of New Orleans are. It is hard for me to imagine being safe and walking a block or two down the road and being in a horrible/unsafe part of town. I just hope we return with all of our limbs still attached!
Anywhere you would recommend us visiting (bars, food, etc.) of course besides Margaritaville (thats a given). Thanks a bunch for your insight!

The Days Inn is not in a great neighborhood so if you are walking try to stay with a group and in illuminated areas. As for the streetcar, I've never been bothered on it however I have been panhandled at various stops. That's been the worse experience on the streetcar.
If you are walking around the Quarter after dark, stay clear of unlit streets unless you are in a group. Stay out of the cemetary after dark as well, it's been the site of muggings, rapes and murders over the years. Bourbon, Canal, Decatuar are all fairly well lit and busy so they tend to be safer. It doesn't mean that you won't run into problems if you are completely wasted. Pick pockets abound, as do panhandlers and as a result you can you lose your money.
New Orleans is like many big cities some parts are nice and safe and others are more unsavory. I hope you will have a fun time.
Captain Jack's Bar & Grill, Home to the Lost Manatee.
Packing a pistol is a great way to get shot, arrested or get the gun stolen there. Just stay in the better parts of town.
The Tropical Isle is fun, it's on Bourbon. Only try one Hand Grenade then stop for a while- I think Everclear is one of the main ingredients. The owners are parrotheads. Also, be sure to hit Pat O's. It's touristy, but it is the original. There's so much good food there, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal anywhere in the city. The place on Bourbon where you can eat on the balcony right around the Tropical Isle and Bourbob Street Blues and Boogie Bar has the best alligator I've ever had.

I am heading out to New Orleans in a few weeks for buisness and I am staying at the Le Pavillon Hotel (833 Poydras St) this is my first time going to NO is this a good location/hotel?

I frequent NOLA. I have never felt unsafe, although the stats show it is a dangerous place.
I would recommend starting on the Canal St end of Burbon, and keep walking till you hit Frenchman St. Canal St is probably one of the cheesiest, tourist trap places there is. If you want to hear rock n roll music, go to Burbon. Want to hear local music, go to Frenchman St. Some performers to seek out- Dwayne Doopise(he plays at the Opera House on Burbon), Big Al Carson(Funky Pirate on Burbon), Joe Krown(TBA Bar on Frenchman). Check out www.offbeat.com for info on local music. And if you want to find the best in local music, go to the Louisiana Music Factory- a small local store, only a few blocks from the mega stores of Virgin and Tower.

I was completely being sarcastic! I don't even own a pistol (couple of shotguns, but no pistols). I guess I could take the shotguns, one under each arm. Do you think that would keep me safe?

Sorry!! I know enough people who genuinely think that way to not even consider that you were being sarcastic!
