Southport is just a few minutes up the highway from Oak Island. The ferry runs from Southport over to Fort Fisher....nice ride.
At Fort Fisher, you can see the civil war fort and also one of NC's great aquariums. Nice beaches over there too. Just a little further up the beach, you pass through Carolina and Kure beaches...then into Wilmington. You can check out the battleship North Carolina. Also used to be some cool shops in the Cotton Exchange (on the waterfront http://www.shopcottonexchange.com/)
There used to be some neat antique shops in Southport. Amongst the typical small town treasures, you could sometimes find some neat nautical memoribilia.
Where are you staying on Oak Island....Caswell, Yaupon or Long Beach?

Salt air it ain't thin,
It can stick right to your skin,
And make you feel fine
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
