Australian rock act INXS will be the band at the center of television producer Mark Burnett's new reality show, "Rock Star." As previously reported, the latest show from the creator of such hits as "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" will see a new lead singer chosen for the veteran rock act.

"I am a long-time fan of INXS and feel very fortunate that INXS approached us with this idea and have entrusted us with their future," Burnett says in a statement posted today (June 14) on the band's official Web site. "I feel there's room on TV for more than one great music-based show, and I feel that rock music has been totally left out of that mix. 'Rock Star' is the perfect aspirational show and is a great fit with the [Mark Burnett Productions] brand."

Since the death of INXS singer Michael Hutchence in 1997, surviving band members Andrew Farriss, Tim Farriss, Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers have occasionally performed with fellow Australian Jon Stevens on vocals. That lineup played during the closing ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney and toured North America in 2002 with Simple Minds.

"After Michael died, we wanted to search the world for a new singer but didn't know how we could effectively do that," Tim Farriss says. "By having Mark and everyone at MBP embrace the concept, we've now found a fantastic way to make that happen."

"Rock Star" auditions will be held on five continents. The winner and INXS will record a studio album, the band's first since 1997's "Elegantly Wasted" (Mercury), and then head out on a world tour.

Unlike other music reality shows such as "American Idol" and "Nashville Star," the viewing audience will not be the sole arbiter of the show's outcome. Band members will also assess contestants in tandem with leading entertainment industry specialists.

"Times have changed and television is now a valued medium to reach people all over the world," Andrew Farriss adds. "[Burnett's] record speaks for itself -- he is an amazing producer and we are confident that together we are going to create something very different and very special."

...No my PHriends, I think it's sad. Granted, this will boost attention to the band again; however, it's as bubble-gumish approach as ever... catching the wave of reality shows and American Idol. :-?

CBS Nabs INXS Reality Series

After a healthy bidding war, CBS has landed the Mark Burnett-produced reality series in which aspiring musicians will compete to become the new lead singer of Australian rock band INXS. Originally pitched as "Rock Star," the now untitled reality series is described as a cross between "American Idol" and the hit Burnett series "Survivor," set in the world of rock music.

After a multi-continent search with auditions in cities throughout the United States and Canada, as well as London, Tokyo and INXS' hometown of Sydney, about a dozen male and female finalists will be selected to live together in a Hollywood Hills home. The winner will embark on a worldwide concert tour with INXS and sing on the group's next album.

The series is set to premiere in summer 2005. It will feature two hours of programming each week: a combination of taped segments that focus on the relationships between the contestants in the house, live performances and a weekly elimination determined by viewers, judges and INXS band members.

How the two hours will be broken down into broadcasts is yet to be determined.

"INXS is one of the world's premier rock bands, and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for someone," Burnett said. "Rock stars are colorful personalities and charismatic performers who make great reality TV characters. Add to that a global format, elimination-style competition and the enormous stakes of becoming the lead singer in a successful group, and you have a unique environment for compelling unscripted drama."

In addition to his four-year "Survivor" relationship with CBS, Burnett said he was attracted to the network for the new project because of the additional opportunities stemming from CBS' hosting of the Grammys and the network's sibling music-oriented cable and radio properties, including MTV and VH1.

At least they are searching for a lead singer in Australia ...

they are after all an Australian band - and it would be a shame for a singer to be from another country ....

just how I feel about it ....

Ok, why would they even consider a female lead singer?!! This isn't some garage band out of Nowheresville, Arkansas, it's a band that everyone who listened to pop music in the 1980s is familiar with!

And Creeky, I completely understand wanting one of the biggest Aussie bands in the world to be an Aussie fronted band.
