Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants

Post by Gypsy In The Palace »

I'm sitting here listening to the replay of Cincinnati 2000 on Radio Margaritaville and just heard Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants. I had never heard that song until that tour, and I don't think I have heard it since then. But, that song is absolutely beautiful! I wish he would throw that song into an upcoming set list. What a very soothing song!

A true story, even... :)

The song was written about real boys named Magnus and Mishka (sp?), who lived with their parents aboard sailboats in the Caribbean in the 70's and early 80's. Jimmy thought it was cool, and wrote a song about them. Mishka (Mr. Moon) lived aboard "Moon," and Magnus lived aboard "Venus." A third vessel of the same design, "Mars," was often anchored in the same area. Thus, "Once around Venus, twice around Mars" refers to the kids traveling around the anchorage in their dinghies. The other people mentioned in the song are playmates, parents, etc.

I heard the story from Magnus's father one afternoon in the early 80's, when I was a guest aboard "Venus." :D

That is so nice, Jen!

He also mentions it in "A Pirate Looks at Fifty". The children sailed over to him one morning with some freshly baked bread and told him, "We're from the Moon!"

Another aspect of the story is that when the children brought him the freshly baked bread (and coffee, I think), Jimmy had a nasty hangover and so he appreciated the children's offerings even more. So much in fact, that he decided to write a song for them!
