Today Show

Post by Goodman »

Back in summer 1999? I got up at 2AM to take the LIRR in to NYC to see Jimmy. My plan was to leave later but I couldn't sleep. Needless to say hundreds/thousands of Parrotheads were earlier birds than me. Still it was the closest I ever been to the man. He did Come Monday. Margaritaville (maybe 6 takes) and best of all "Pacin the Cage". His rendition of this was alone worth my efforts. I got to see Matt Lauer freak when the crowd yelled "Math Suks". He thought they meant Matt Suks.
Jimmy tossed outr Krispy Kremes to the crowd. I shortly went out and bought the stock.

All and all a memorable day captured by Mrs Goodman on my VCR. Yes I can actually pick myself out.

You decide.

If you leave work a little early on Thursday and make it to the venue by about 8 or 9 on Thurs night, it might be worth it. You'd have a chance to meet him the night before, and you'll be close to the stage during the concert.

But, like Goodman, I got there around 3 am last year, and there were hundreds of Parrotheads ahead of me. It was worth it for me because I live in Manhattan and was able to take the morning off on Fri (i.e., catch up on some sleep). I'm not sure it would be worth it to drive 5 hrs, but then there were plenty of parrotheads there who drove a lot farther than that, so I don't know.

But to give you some indication, I probably won't be doing the all nighter thing again. It was worth it to do it once, but I don't think twice. If I go this year, I'll get there around 8 am just to experience the atmosphere for a bit and listen to the music. But, I'll be behind the stage for certain.

There are several other threads on this topic, including discussions of the drawbacks of the Today Show concert (including the very annoying "VIP section", filled with half-hearted Buffett fans who got to steal the best seats at 8 am, and didn't even know to do FINS!!)

I drove from Boston in 2001 and got there around 10pm. I wouldn't do it again, too long of a night to hear 4 songs and I was really close. Just my opinion.

Me?!?! Awwww Shucks! <---- Real name Amy!

I'm up in the air about the Today show too! I know my sister isn't keen about camping out all night, and neither am I really. I'm sure we'll swing by. We'll see what happens!

I've been twice, 1999 was a great experience, we got a nice spot where we could see everything, 2001 was a disaster, we weren't even on the same block, and we never even actually saw Jimmy, just the corner where Tina was. Whenever a truck went by, and there were many, it would block out the sound, so we couldn't hear.

One good time, one bad time, it's enough, it's now a "been there, done that". We're outside Hartford, so for me, it's not worth the hassle.
