do we want JB to be commercially successful?
personally i like being a bit different than most in my music. not just rock or country or even rap crap! i enjoy opening people to something different. and when they "get it" i get someone else that shares the same state of mind. concerts are parties with 20,000 of you closest phriends. i like it just the way it is, thank you very much.
if the phone doesn't ring it's me...

I hate to inform you, but we don't own Jimmy Buffett. Personally, I think it's great that he is enjoying his new found success. When this all blows over, which it will, Jimmy will still be the same artist that we always loved. Let him enjoy himslef while he can, it took him thirty years to get back on the radio.
Buffett went from being an artist with a cult following in the 70s to one that enjoyed mainstream success with "Margaritaville" and several other hit singles. Once the hits stopped coming he sorta went back to cult status but somehow managed to still be successful without the benefit of radio airplay. For some reason folks seem to be forgetting this time period and think this is his first flirtation with success, I think he'll be just fine.

I'm well aware of Jimmy's past successes. However, this has the potential to take him to a new level. This release is getting more publicity than any album he's ever done. As a result, a lot of folks will be discovering Jimmy's music for the first time. It's already setting industry records and it hasn't even been released yet (Amazon pre-orders as one example).
Here is the bottom line for me. Jimmy has worked hard for this and he deserves it. This is his time and he's enjoying it to the fullest. His glow is obvious whenever he talks about the attention LTC is getting. Jbfins is right - we don't own Jimmy. We shouldn't try to hold him back or keep him to ourselves.

My view: the more popular he is, the longer he'll have to tour or he'll be disapointing many more fans
Graduated with honors from Georgia Southern University. I am a brother in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. I've seen Buffett 7 times. Going to the Medical College of Georgia, Class of 2014!!!!

I think it's weird to like music only if it's not popular. Personally I like music for music, and if it happens to be popular, fine, if not, that's fine too.corona6pk wrote:personally i like being a bit different than most in my music.
I don't ever stop liking a particular band just because other people have discovered them.

Yeah, it's too bad he isn't more successful.
Let's review the RIAA certifications:
The top 3:
1. SYKBH - Multi-platinum (6 million)
2. Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads - Multi-platinum (4 million)
3. Meet Me In Margartiaville - Multi-platinum (2 million)
The next 5 (in chronological order of million-selling certification):
CILCIA - Platinum 12/14/77
SOASOAS - Platinum 5/10/78
Fruitcakes - Platinum 12/19/94
Banana Wind - Platinum 8/10/98
Christmas Island - Platinum 5/30/00
The gold albums are:
You Had To Be There
Volcano
Feeding Frenzy
Barometer Soup
Don't Stop The Carnival
Beach House On The Moon
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays
So, that makes 15 gold (500,000 units shipped), 8 platinum (1 million units shipped) and 3 multi-platinum.
He is among the top selling artists of all-time with more than 20 million albums shipped.
Songs You Know By Heart is among the Top 100 albums of all-time with 6 million units shipped.
Wow. Look out Maroon 5 and Savage Garden. Jimmy's gaining on you.

Some of those can be seen on the walls of the Margaritaville Cafe and shop in Key West. If I remember correctly, CILCIA, SOASOAS and YHTBT are on the wall upstairs in the cafe, and Volcano, Fruitcakes and some others are in the shop.
The 3 compilations are the highest selling albums? Man that bugs me...
And looking at the sales of the studio albums... Yeah, that's really great, but to think of how many of those are the CDCP issues makes me sick.
Nevertheless, it goes to show that Jimmy is "Quietly Making Noise", meaning he already is successful, we just don't know it.

I'm happy for Jimmy. He seems to enjoy his success. But I think he knows, as well as we do, that regardless of what happens, it'll still be the tried and true Parrotheads that keep coming to see him and that keep giving him a reason to make his music
What is it all about...? I just don't know, but I can't go back home.

Of course I want him to be successful. It's really selfish of any fan who doesn't want their favorite artist to become successful. I think it's great that Jimmy seems to be getting the respect of from other artists that he has deserved for so long. And I'm really happy that other artist list him as an influence in their music and lifestlyle. He has certainly shown his appreciation to other songwriters over the years(all the covers). It's about time some have come his way. Jimmy deserves this attention more than ever. It's about time! Just a parrotheads point of view.

I look at it the same way I look at his restaurant/shrimp/Krispy Kreme ventures. He's doing everything he can to do what he can for his kids once he's gone from here. He has parlayed a very strange musical career into a very successful business venture, while still going to work on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in shorts and bare feet. That is what it's all about.
So he hangs out with stars and they say "Sure. I'll do a song with you." Works for me, even if I don't really like most of the duet stuff I've heard so far. I can always take my LTC disc, choose songs that don't have Kendy Straitritt duets and blend them with another disc of oddball JB favorites to create my own LTC disc. Then I'll be in high cotton.

Cartmill, those are some interesting numbers. Again, I'm not arguing that Jimmy hasn't been successful. However, the type of exposure he's getting now is unprecedented. If people who haven't heard most of his music like LTC, they'll be hungry for more. IMO, that hunger is what has the potential to lauch SYKBH (or MMIM, or something else) into the Top Ten of all time, not just the top 100. That's what I mean by taking Jimmy to a new level, and that's the kind of success I think he deserves.

If it makes you feel any better, BBB&B sold a majority of the 4 million at an average price of $45. Roughly $200 million in sales for one album. I don't think Jimmy minds.Parrot Monkey wrote:The 3 compilations are the highest selling albums? Man that bugs me...
