Honeymoon in KW
We are tossing around ideas for our honeymoon next May. KW is one the places that has come up. We are both Parrotheads, so it seemed like a natural choice. My question, is there enough to do down there to fill a 10 day trip? I realize the bars and restraunts are great, but what else is available? Anyone know if there is a place to rent motorcycles (brand not particularly important) nearby?
The other place we are thinking about is the Outer Banks. We've never been there either.
Any information that would help with our decision would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks.

When hubby and I were thinking of getting married down there, we looked into a number of rental-homes and condos. There has recently been some laws passed regarding those. The last I knew was that the minimum rental period was 30 days. I think they were trying to deter some of the partiers.rednekkPH wrote:Thanks AH. I think we are leaning towards KW, unless somebody has some good reasons not to. What is the lodging situation like down there? Is it strictly hotels, or are there vacation homes available for rent? Anyone know of some helpful sites to check out to get me started? Thanks again.

KW trying to deter partiers? Damn place is going to hell in a handbasket.buffettbride wrote:When hubby and I were thinking of getting married down there, we looked into a number of rental-homes and condos. I haven't checked up on it in many months so I don't know how true all this really is. I'll see if I can find some of my old links.

I just checked a site and you have to have a special "hotel" type license to rent out on anything other than a monthly basis. Hmmm.PHBeerman wrote:KW trying to deter partiers? Key West is a great choice. I spent July 4th down there and had a terrific time. I suggest the following:
1) Jet ski around the island. My tour guide was a college kid and he let us go wild. It's a great way to see the island;
2) take the trails of Margaritaville tour. If you are a serious parrothead, you won't learn too much that you don't already know, but they will show you the local bars that are much better than the tourist bars. Schooners, which is next to JB's recording studio, had great live music.
3) Live music, Live music, Live music - it is everywhere
4) Scuba Dive - if you aren't already certified, I would suggest it. the best diving is actually up in Key Largo, not key west. If you are new to diving, it's a great place to go. Most of the dives are very shallow, easy dives.
5) They have all sorts of old time, but very nice, sailing ships. Take a booze cruise.
6) Peel and eat shrimp is the best (Crabby Dicks will bring out a pound of boiled shrimp for a mere $18.95)
7) Lastly, check out the bar the Bull and Whistle. It's right on Duval. They have really good art work painted on the wall. Buffett is painted in a white suit up on the wall. If you have enough to drink, venture up to the bar on the roof named the Garden of Eden. It is a clothing optional bar and you will truly see some characters up there. Most people do not take their clothes off, but it is downright entertaining. Jimmy could write a hell of a song about that place.

Man, no way that I'd do KW for 10 days...that is entirely too long.
KW has only one real "beach" (Smathers), and as far as beaches go, it ain't that good.
If it rains, you can basically do all the "rainy day" activities in one day.
If you like to spend time in bars, then KW for 10 days is doable. If that gets old after day 5, then I would suggest someplace else.
If you want to do the Keys, then a 10 day "Keys" trip, from KW to Miami would be a much better bet, and will allow you to experience more of the old flavor of KW (the old KW of Buffett died many moons ago).

Honeymoon in EYW
My husband and I have spent 10 days in Key West on more than one occasion. As a matter of fact, this year for MOTM we're going for ten days. There is definitely enough to do. But, are we forgetting the laid-back lifestyle that Key West is famous for? What's wrong with just lounging around the pool for a couple of afternoons? Trust me, you won't regret going there. It's incredible! I'll give you a couple of sites of places that we have stayed.

I would most recommend Pineapple Cottage. It's 1/2 block off Duval around the corner from Margaritaville. It has a HUGE pool that is VERY secluded. Exactly what you need for a honeymoon! If it's not available, The Real Estate Company of Key West OR Preferred Properties can definitely help you. Also, check out www.keywestparadise.com. Let me know if you have any other questions! Have a great time!

Here is another site with vacation homes for rent. I've rented several places from this site (various places, not KW) andf have had good luck.
http://www3.cyberrentals.com/FLO/FLO.html
This site lists a KW location to rent Harleys:
http://www.cyclease.com/
Since you will probably be flying into Miami there are several bike rental agencies there.
Good luck.
