i love this album. This was the album that I listened to when i was a kid. I am a young phan but not that young but this was the album that I got hooked on. I think that Jim should play these songs at his concerts. But when will i ever get that lucky?

To me, the most underrated Buffett album. "Love in Decline", "Burn that Brigde", and "Come to the moon", are great songs. What happened to Jimmy? Now we get "Math Suks"!

They ought to re-release the album with a different cover. That cowboy hat scares the hell out of me!

If any of Jimmy's albums exemplify the term "gulf-western" this is the one. In fact the cover is a dead give-away that Jimmy is about to change course again. The term "gulf-western" is very appropriate for "Riddles in the Sand", but maybe "country-calypso" would be better, since every song is either country, calypso, or a mixture of both. This album is also an open door to Jimmy's personal life from beginning to end. Marital problems and midlife crises flow through its veins like illegal narcotics. Are you looking for INFIDELITY? Look no further than "Who's the Blonde Stranger?", "Ragtop Day", "Knees of My Heart", "Burn That Bridge", and of course, "Love in Decline" (the anthem for infidelity). Are you looking for DENIAL or INDECISION? Try "When the Wild Life Betrays Me" and "She's Going Out of My Mind". There seems to be a sense of guilt in "Burn That Bridge". "Bigger Than the Both of Us", "Come to the Moon", and "La Vie Dansante" (french for: FOLLOW THE DANCING LIFE) all seem to offer up feelings of acceptance and hope...that it was all a big mistake or misunderstanding.
Clearly this album does not follow the same course as its predecessor, but if Jimmy sailed the same waters all the time he'd eventually find his way into the windless doldrums. And while some will say that "Riddles in the Sand" is a poor album, Jimmy must have done something right with it, because 3 of these songs made the country charts and went as high as 55, 42, and 37.

I love this album. It's my favorite Buffett album cover from the beach dunes to the
lifesaver(if that's what it's called)
to the guitar Jimmy's holding with the half naked woman paited on it.
I've always wondered what RIDDLES IN THE SAND means?
I was only 11 when it came out(84)but it makes me wish that I was 18 back then.
This cd makes the 80's sound like a great time to be a young adult as opposed to those damn early 90's when I was in my prime.
Every song is great!!!!
LOVE IN DECLINE(great message,less love,more sex)
RAGTOP DAY(makes me wish I still had my ragtop Geo Tracker cruising A1A in St. Augustine)
WHO'S THE BLONDE STRANGER(a funny song about cheating on your mate.)
KNEES OF MY HEART(great song with that island/reggae sound)
This album is one of those that I did'nt listen to a lot at first but now it's one of my faves.
In my backyard I have made myself a
Mini-Margaritaville complete with hammock,captain's wheel,banana trees,palm tree,assorted tropical plants,
fake parrots, ocean scene painted on the inside of my privacy fence, and a lifesaver with the words RIDDLES IN THE SAND painted on it.
Yes I am too PHar gone!!!!!
If I could have only been listening to this back in 84 instead of "Thriller"
~~^^^'phinz UP!!!!!!

This is among Jimmy's weaker albums, but it does have some decent songs. "Who's the Blonde Stranger", "Knees on My Heart", "Ragtop Day", and "Burn that Bridge" are all fairly good. Some of the songs, like "She's Going out of My Mind" and especially "When the Wild Life Betray Me" s*** immensely.

Fairly pleasant but also fairly bland songs. The cover deserves to be changed to remove that stupid cowboy hat.

Just got this CD and I love it! Knees of My Heart and Come to the Moon are two of my favorites-fun to sing along to! This is a great CD that you can listen all the way through without skipping. Definitely one of Jimmy's best!

I have to agree with headparrothead and sonofabeach, this album is an intro into Jimmys personal life but hell most of us know more about Jimmy then some of our own family memebers right? Since "A Pirate Looks at 50" came out, I am sure we know more then we used to. The songs he sings are his life, sailing, love lifes, traveling, lets be thankful that god created Jimmy and gave him to us. Riddles in the Sand is by far a great album and it does show the transition between country and beach music (just look at the cover) a cowboy on the beach and the songs ragtop day, whos the blond stranger, and la vie dansante.

I always listen to this album because it is so good. I think Riddles In the Sands refers to his wife( I have read all of his books)

Just picked up RITS after hearing "Knees Of My Heart" live at the Columbia concert. Each song opens up old memories of the beach, ragtops, and the summertime scene. Great album.
