Contrary to Ordinary would be a good one to start with, if you can find it. There's a new best-of CD that came out a couple of years ago. Cowboy Boots & Bathing Suits is my favorite of the newer releases.

Cowboy Suits and Bathing Suits is the one I play the most.

If you want sort of a BEST of JJW, get the new Gypsy Songman. You can get it from Amazon.com

You can also get the older version of Gypsy Songman...RED, used from amazon.
This is the first CD of his I bought.

My favorite is one called SCAMP!

A great live one is Night after Night. I think it was recorded at the Birchmere if I remember correctly.

Great Gonzos would be a good CD to start out with. It's pretty much a best of cd and contains several songs that could be heard at a JJW concert be it a solo acoustic, duet acoustic with Django or with the Gonzo Band.

1991 Great Gonzos (MCA CD)

CD, MCA - MCAD10381

Gettin' By (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Sangria Wine (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Mr. Bojangles (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Desparados Waiting For A Train (Guy Clark)
Pick Up The Tempo (Willie Nelson)
Up Against The Wall Redneck (Ray Wylie Hubbard)
London Homesick Blues (Gary P. Nunn)
Takin' It As It Comes (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Backsliders Wine (Michael Murphy)
Old Five And Dimers Like Me (Billy Joe Shaver)
Charlie Dunn (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Railroad Lady (Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffett)
L.A. Freeway (Guy Clark)
Don't It Make You Want To Dance (Rusty Weir)

I agree with everyone on the choice of Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits. This one gets a lot of play in my cd player. It shows the tropical side of Scamp and as we all know without him Jimmy would probably have never gone to Key West.

1998 Cowboy Boots & Bathin' Suits (T&TM, CD only)

TRIED & TRUE MUSIC

Come Away To Belize With Me (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Barefootin' (Robert Parker)
Gringo In Belize (Dennis Wolf)
Champagne Don't Hurt Me Baby (Eric Von Schmidt)
Wanted For Love(Bob Livingston, Lane Bybee)
Boats To Build (Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson)
Sloop John B.(Traditional, arr. by Jerry Jeff Walker)
Rhythm of the Rain(John Gummoe)
Fred Neil Medley (Fred Neil)
The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder (Hugh Prestwood)
Cowboy Boots & Bathin' Suits (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Those Were The Days (Keith Sykes)

But I have to say my all time favorite is Viva Terlingua. This is the first JJW album I heard and this started my whole experience with Buffett as well.

1973 Viva Terlingua (MCA CD)

LP, MCA - MCA37005
CD, MCA - MCAD-919

Gettin' By (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Desperados Waiting For The Train (Guy Clark)
Sangria Wine (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Little Bird (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Get It Out (Jerry Jeff Walker)
Up Against The Wall Red Neck Mother (Ray Wylie Hubbard)
Backsliders Wine (Michael Murphy)
The Wheel (Jerry Jeff Walker)
London Homesick Blues (Gary P. Nunn)

I'm going to get some JJW, too. I wasn't familiar with him until I got so focused on JB and started listening to RM all the time, but I really like some of the songs I've heard, like Sangria Wine, etc., and very much enjoy the "live" recordings you can hear sometimes on RM.

"Hill Country Rain" is worth a buy too and has some great songs on it such as
So Bad Last Night
The Dinosaur Blues
Rock & Roll My Baby
The Man He Used To Be
etc.
The title track, "Hill Country Rain" rocks and gives me goose bumps

There's also a "Live at Gruene Hall" CD that's pretty good. Willie Nelson helps him out on "Man with the Big Hat", "Trashy Women", "Pick-up Truck Song" and "I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight" are also good on that disc. I need to get an album with Hill Country Rain on it as well.
