Brian Wilson's "Smile"

Post by Parrot Monkey »

I'm sure many know already, but Brian is releasing his second solo album of 2004 on 9/28. It was originally going to be a Beach Boys album, but Brian scraped it and the recordings the Beach Boys did of the songs. Some of the songs were re-recorded for the 1967 "Smiley Smile" album, but many went previously un-released. To avoid getting permisson, Brian re-recorded the entire project solo.

(feel free to correct me if I got any of the facts above wrong or if there is more to ad).

The main reason for posting is that the track listing and cover art are now available.

Yep, that was his first album of this year that came out in June. Great album with guest apperances by Elton John, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. I was about to comment on the lack of promotion for this album, but I see there is some. Still, where are the singles and radio tracks? It's an awsome and highly recommended album.

Mine too. Every song form that disc gets a 10/10 rating in my book. It's also a parrothead must have as it contains South America, co-wrote (and featuring background vocals) by Jimmy and recorded at Shrimp Boat.

Brian Wilson is great and I would recommend any of the solo albums. The latest, Gettin' in over my Head is no exception. He is a genious with pop music and sometimes quirky as well. It's such a fun album.

I have always been disappointed that Warner never really promoted any of his solo stuff much, if at all.

Hopefully the history and anticipation of Smile will change all that. Hopefully his long overdue recognition will come.

Also on Imagination (my favorite) Buffett cowrote and sings back up on South American...

I've heard the excellent title track from the Imagination album on the muzak at Publix. I don't know if you count that as promotion, but it's some publicity. Rhino was the label that released Gettin' In Over My Head and Nonesuch will be releaseing Smile. Why so a different label per album?

Both of those labels are under Warner.

I don't know if you have any of the classic Beach Boys stuff, but if not, there are musts, starting with Pet Sounds through Holland. All have some really cool tunes.
