Too much of LTC in the live sets or what?
I just checked some recent set lists and compared them to lists from earlier in the tour....and boy is Jimmy HAMMERING the new album.
At last count, he is playing seven songs off LTC.
I have seen Buffett every year since 1991 and have never seen him
beat a new album to death like this.
Now, I am all for hearing something new with something old, but it looks like 1/3 of the list will be new songs at Jones Beach and Fenway.
LTC is a good solid Buffett album...but not a great one.
Jimmy, lighten up a little on the new stuff and fill in with some rarities in the vault....wouldn't we all love to hear a few gems...maybe songs he hasn't played live in 20+ years....now that would make a memorable evening.
Not that I am complaining at all.

That's one reason I really couldn't get into the Alpine show this year. LTC was not yet, so some of the songs I had never heard.
After coming off Atlanta and Dallas where it seemed like he played more of the older songs. I like the songs off LTC, but I like them much more now that I know what he is singing.

Some of my favorite bands are ones that debut new material live. There's just way too much reliance by some artists with tying in a tour with the promotion of a new release. One doesn't necessarily have to exist because of the other. For instance the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, R.E.M., the Drive-By Truckers and others that escape my memory at the moment have a long history of breaking in new songs on the road; some of them end up on records, some of them don't but that's what bootlegs are for.

Don't get me wrong; I really do enjoy the new stuff. Scarlet Begonias live is IMO one of the best "crowd songs" on this tour. It has that beat that everyone just seems to dance to. I love going back now and listening to the shows.
My comment is based more on the fact that the three shows that I've seen this Summer were prior to LTC being released. I had not been able to hear any of the songs (except LTC itself). When he played them in concert, its almost like the whole place sort of went dead. No one could sing along.

I've done about 6 shows per year for the last 2 years, and I would rather hear 7 songs from the new album than 7 songs I've heard in concert 14 times before. I would love to hear some old gems, but this was a #1 release- there will be a lot of virgins there, and they'll expect to hear songs from LTC and SYKBH. If Jimmy disappoints or annoys the existing phans, we'll still be back next year. The new people might not be.

I am in a similar boat....I am bringing two virgins with me to Jones Beach that mostly know SYKBH and nothing off LTC, except the songs I have played for them.
Newbies to Buffett in the live would want to hear songs they may have heard in the past. I have yet to hear anything from LTC on the radio here in Boston....mostly because I listen to classic rock and not country.
Several new songs would be great.....I think I draw my personal line in the sand at four....anything over that is simply overkill, no matter how good the artist thinks the songs are. Personally, I think he is really trying too hard to push LTC sales...something Buffett cared little about in the past.

I have to agree (while not having been to as many concerts in the last two years), that some of the novelty of this year's tour has been the new songs from LTC. Finally got to hear "Coast of Carolina" done live, and the video they play on the monitors during the song is incredibly touching. Also have to say that I loved hearing "Simply Complicated" last night, and while many of the folks in the audience didn't know all the words, they were willing to go with it (and the Jerry Springer line got a great response).Coconuts wrote:I've done about 6 shows per year for the last 2 years, and I would rather hear 7 songs from the new album than 7 songs I've heard in concert 14 times before. Frankly, there are some songs that are on the Yellow Album that I could stand not ever hearing again, or at least in lower rotation. I was also really happy that Scarlet Begonias did not make last night's list; having heard it done live twice now, it really isn't a song that is going to grow on me.
But, it was an incredible concert, and there are a couple of Buffett Virgins who left last night with a better appreciation of The Man and the music.

Sadly that's because that's how they've been trained by bands that do the tour-record-tour routine which admittedly most bands do. I enjoy hearing songs I've never heard before and tend to like bands that aren't afraid to debut totally new songs in concert. For instance, the Drive-By Truckers are touring right now and although The Dirty South is the new record, they're already playing songs that will most likely appear on their next album. It's all about defying audience expectations to me and they are one of quite a few that do that on a near constant basis.land_shark3 wrote:My comment is based more on the fact that the three shows that I've seen this Summer were prior to LTC being released. I would be just fine with never hearing anything from the yellow album ever again. But it's not my show, and even though I don't care if I hear them, it doesn't mean that no one else does. And as I've said before, the yellow album songs have to be played or I think some of the drunken SYKBH phans would riot.

You are right on there... the problem is that some people who call themselves parrotheads only know the songs from SYKBH, and they don't know any of his other great songs. If he was to take out songs like Margaritaville and substitute other songs in, like He Went to Paris (even though it is on SYKBH) those SYKBH phanatics would be peeved, although real, true parrotheads would be delighted.

I remeber Buffett debuting Cousin In Miami in 1993 the year before it was released. The 1st night we heard we decided it was awesome and we were dancing and signing along (to the best of our ability) the next night. Ah, memories of Poplar Creek.

It's a couple more songs than normal off a new album....but thats to be expected when the new album has been as successful as it has been. The virgins will still get to hear most of the songs off the yellow album and leave happy....they wouldn't know most other songs from Jimmy's catalog anyways. I think the setlists have been a fair attempt to satisfy the longtime diehard fans, the yellow album fans, and those who just discovered Jimmy through his emergence in the country genre.

I agree, although I would add that I don't think there's a way to please all 3 of those groups at the same time.dean_siu wrote:I think the setlists have been a fair attempt to satisfy the longtime diehard fans, the yellow album fans, and those who just discovered Jimmy through his emergence in the country genre.
And honestly, I feel like a bad parrothead when I don't know the words to all of the songs. I know I'm a dork.

I have the bootleg from Camden from 2002 Far Side of the World tour and off the top of my head he plays:
Hokey Pokey
Far Side of the World
Savanah Fair You Well
Last Man Standing
Author Du Rocher (Sp)
USS Zydecoldsmobile (Sp)
Tonight I Just Need My Guitar
Blue Guitar
That makes 7 songs of a new album at the time with 12 tracks.
So 5 or 6 isn't unusual.
