First-time nominee U2 leads the 15 finalists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2005.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, meanwhile, is poised to become rap's first inductee into the shrine.

The Irish rockers and the New York rappers lead a list that also includes: punk rock icons the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith and the Stooges; classic rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, the J. Geils Band and the Pretenders; blues guitarist Buddy Guy; Nashville legend Conway Twitty; singer-songwriters Randy Newman and Gram Parsons; and R&B acts the O'Jays, Percy Sledge and Wanda Jackson.

Ballots were mailed to voters this week and are due back at the Hall of Fame Foundation headquarters by Oct. 8. The inductees will most likely be announced in November.

The induction ceremony -- the Hall of Fame's 20th -- is expected to take place in mid-March in New York .

WHO? I'm so unhip!

Although the R&R HOF includes many people I never heard of, and / or their significance escapes me, I realize it's not "all about me". I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there last summer, found lots of cool and interesting stuff, and respect it's existance.

Why hasn't Jimmy Buffett been voted? What are the requirements?

Buffett's eligible but to my knowledge has never been nominated. Here's the criteria (he did induct the Eagles a few years ago though):

http://www.rockhall.com/hof/process.asp

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.
