License to Chill Release

Post by VaPH »

Does anyone know what the next single to be released off of License to Chill will be? When is it scheduled to hit?

I would imagine they'd let Trip Around The Sun run its course first. It's still at #41 last I heard.
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win
But the authorities insist on my leaving
Take care my American friend

I agree. I think the success or failure of TATS will dictate the next single or if there will be one. If there is, I hope they pick a song he does solo. If not, he may come off to some as a novelty that can't carry a song on his own. And we all know better than that.
Look I'm a little slow today, I just switched to Sanka, so have a heart.

Ditto on that. I want it to be one that Jimmy wrote or co-wrote. Coastal Confessions would be good too! :D

I must agree. Coastal Confessions and Coast of Carolina are 2 amazing songs and he wrote or co-wrote them. As it stands Jimmy's last top 30 hit that he wrote and sang solo is still Margaritaville so I think it would be good if one of his solo songs got some radio play. I think that these 2 songs are strong enough to not require a huge country star in order to get radio play.

Here's a general question for the music industry folks. What factors work to determine a song's release date? My sister in law cowrote a single that's soon to be released on a major label. The CD isn't coming out until Jan/Feb but the single was supposed to be out already. The song release has been moved 3 times (it's supposed to be 10/4 now). They just shot a video and I imagine that's part of it - what else comes into play?

First of all, congratulations to your sister-in-law.

As for your question...several factors go into determining a release date. Obviously the first thing to consider is when the album is going to be finished. When will recording and mastering be done?

Then, of course, there is the matter of art. The packaging, cover, photography, etc. should be finished by the time the recording is complete. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

Next up, the marketing, artist development and licensing people get involved. When is the best time to release a certain artist or album? I think Beck's new album is a good example of this. His album was due October 26. But Geffen and parent label Interscope were already sinking a ton of money into upcoming albums from U2, Gwen Stefani and the Nirvana box set. Guess what...little marketing money for Beck. (Although, he says the album isn't finished...yeah right). Anyway, would a certain artist sell better in the holiday season? The back-to-school season? Would a new artist stand a better shot at being heard when not going up against releases from Big Act A and the solo debut of the singer from Big Act B.

Meanwhile, the artist development team has to plan promotional appearances to coincide with the release. You want your artist to be on Leno, Letterman and Conan the week of or week before the album's release. If that can't happen, then adjust the release date accordingly.

Back at the office the lawyers are making sure all the licensing and copyrights are in place.

These are just a few items. There is probably more I'm not thinking of right now. Key Lime Lee and some of the others may be able to add to this.
