I love Kasey Chambers!

I gotta agree with Jahfin about what is considered "country" music these days. I've noticed that a lot people that i know, that are into the "popular" country are very close minded when it comes to listening to less "popular" artists. Some will dislike an artists without ever hearing a song. I have bad mouthed Chesney and McGraws music, but at least I have heard it. I have offered to loan people cds, make them cds, take them to concerts but usually they decline. I will always listen to something before I reject it. Some sem to be afraid to try something new.

I'll agree...He is by far one of the best guitar players out there right now.
I saw the concert special he had on CMT recently and it was awesome to watch him play.

I saw that too, and was quite surprised I actually knew all of the songs! I liked what I saw, and will probably pick up the cd tomorrow for cheep! (Even if not advertised, WalMart normally sells cd's for just under the low 9.99 price Circuit City, Best Buy, and Target advertise for the 1st week it's released.)

They already have. They played their new album in it's entirety to a sold out crowd in Atlanta a few months prior to the album's official release.

R.E.M. is doing something pretty cool. To those that want to hear their new album before it comes out on October 6 you can sign up to have a listening party in your area and they'll send copies of the new CD along with promo items to giveaway at your party.

Back on topic, Keith Urban just so happens to be another modern country artist who's just a bit too polished for me. No offense to those that are fans of his, I just don't consider myself one. For the latest Aussie import, I much prefer Kasey Chambers, not to mention how easy on the eyes she is.:)
You have heard of her??

I was nearly in her latest film clip!!! It was filmed where I walk home from work and they were asking people to be in the crowd (a song about hollywood) - I just wanted to get home, so kept walking!

She is from my "neck of the woods"
Yes, I have. I first got into her when The Captain came out a few years ago. I had the good fortune to see her in concert not long after that when she performed at Waterloo Park in Austin during the SXSW (South By Southwest) Music conference in March of 2001. She's one of my favorite female country/folk singers of the last few years along with Tift Merritt, Kathleen Edwards, Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier, Caitlin Cary and Caitlin's other band Tres Chicas. I've been enjoying Kasey's new release (Wayward Angel) and looking forward to digging into her past work with the Dead Ringer Band.
I just had to throw my two cents in on this one. I agree with Jahfin for the most part on the type of musical artists that he listens to. I could care less about the majority of the artists who get played on my local country radio. However I have seen Keith Urban in concert twice. Once at Farm Aid and another time as an opening act. Though I am not crazy about his "new" country sound, the guy sure can play the guitar. I would go and see him again in concert just to hear the jam sessions that he incorporates into his live shows.

To answer your question, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Buffett puts on one hell of a show, but so does Bruce Springsteen. However they are to very different acts. Keep in mind that each time that I saw Keith Urban, he was just an opening act. If you have to chance to see him live, don't pass him up....but as Marvin Garden's once said...."I know Jimmy Buffett, and your no Jimmy Buffett."

Personally I love plenty of current artists that play country music, they just don't meet the approval of the Nashville establishment:

Old 97s
Caitlin Cary
Drive-By Truckers
Slobberbone
Tift Merritt
Two Cow Garage
Steve Earle
Lucinda Williams
Hank III
Kathleen Edwards
Frog Holler
The Gourds
Kasey Chambers
The Damnations
Todd Snider
Guy Clark
Tres Chicas
Two Dollar Pistols
Donna the Buffalo
Kelly Willis

...and those just scrap the surface.

I didn't have time to list them all!!!! :o
I love Bill Monroe, Iris DeMent, Maria McKee, Jack Ingram, Dale Watson, June Carter Cash, etc..................

..........Gotta admit, however, that I don't like Steve Earle....I think he's highly overrated....and no matter his convictions, his CD's are too "preachy" for my taste....I did like him way back when...I thought "Guitar Town" and "Exit-O" were good records.

Keith Urban: Ready For The Big Time

By Phyllis Stark

If you had asked people in the country music industry during the past few years which artist they believe is primed for top-tier success, more often than not their answer would have been "Keith Urban."

Clear Channel Communications regional VP of programming Clay Hunnicutt calls Urban "one of the top candidates for the next level of superstardom. He has the complete package -- looks, style and the music to go with it."

It's no surprise then that executives at Urban's label, Capitol Records Nashville, are hoping his new album will finally propel him into the stratosphere, alongside Toby Keith and Kenny Chesney. The album, "Be Here," is out Sept. 21.

The past few weeks have been good indicators of Urban's success.

The album's first single, "Days Go By," is in its second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. And in August Urban was nominated for a Country Music Association award for male vocalist of the year, alongside the format's A-listers.

Urban says he was awestruck by the CMA nomination. "I still somehow feel like I should be [carrying] a little hand towel and a tray, asking [the other nominees], 'Can I freshen your drink?'"

The new album follows his double-platinum "Golden Road," which remains in the top 15 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart 101 weeks after its release.

"Be Here," produced by Urban and his "Golden Road" collaborator, Dann Huff, features nine songs written or co-written by Urban, including one he penned with Richard Marx. The album's choice covers are Rodney Crowell's "Making Memories of Us" and the Elton John/Bernie Taupin song "Country Comfort," previously recorded by John and Juice Newton.

The album's title reflects Urban's focus on "the importance of living in the moment."

Urban will support the album with his first headlining tour. Dubbed CMT on Tour: Keith Urban Be Here '04, the outing kicks off Oct. 8 in Muncie, Ind., and will span 20 shows in five weeks, including stops in Dallas, New York, Detroit, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh.

Universal South newcomer Katrina Elam is also on the bill. Urban plays electric guitar and ganjo (a guitar/banjo hybrid) on Elam's current single, "No End in Sight."

Urban has been busy promoting the album in his native Australia, where it is issued Sept. 20. During stops in Melbourne and Sydney, he packed 36 interviews into five days.

Despite a stellar recent past, Urban says he didn't feel any pressure to top his previous successes. And he doesn't view himself as a superstar in waiting. "When I look at myself, I see the guy that's still struggling," he says.

Noting that he has spent most of his life playing in clubs and trying to establish himself, Urban says, "When [success] starts happening, you keep viewing yourself as the guy trying to get there. I don't think that will ever change, because there will always be new horizons."

Did anybody catch Keith Urban on Leno last night? He was far from having his best singing performance, but was still great on the guitar.
