Old Hippy - Sorry just getting into this discussion a bit late... I am totally 100% supportive of ticket scalping and brokering where legal (and no I don't do it). Why ? Because it is WORTH IT TO ME TO PAY EXTRA not to mess around with Ticketmaster. I just paid $150 over face to get 4th row floor tickets in Oakland and I'M THRILLED !!! I could have never, ever gotten those on my own...not in a million years. Last year, I got up at 3:30 AM and waited in the rain until 10 AM when Buffett tickets went on sale. I was first in line (no lottery). I had tickets 32 rows back ! I would have happily traded my 8 and 1/2 hour wait in the rain for a $150 premium and better seats. How much do you get paid an hour ? I'm very happy to pay the price of convenience. Don't speak for all Parrotheads, please. I have followed Bubba for over 20 years and guarantee I am as much a Parrothead as anyone (and I love you guys !)but let's agree to disagree on the issue of ticket brokering. A National Ban is moronic and will never happen in my lifetime. Try to police the internet. As a ticket-buyer and frequent concert-goer, I DON'T WANT it (I want my Junior Mints !). Life is short...let's let other dweebs stand in line, or whatever they do to get the good tickets, and let me pay them for their services.

It's like trying to make pot illegal. Does that work, no. Attepting to make ticket scalping illegal, won't ever work either (and it doesn't today in states where it is illegal). Why is ticket brokering different than, say, car brokering, real estate brokering, stock brokering or whatever. Are those services "fair" ? I don't know, they provide a service. I can sell my house myself or choose to hire a realtor and pay 7% for using their services. Ticket buying is a service and I WANT that service available to me. Honestly, I don't want a "shot" at good tickets by going to stand in line for hour upon hour, calling to unending busy signals, etc. I would rather just pay someone to do that. If the brokers ticket prices gets too crazy, no one will buy the tickets and they'll go out of business. I'm willing to pay a fair mark up for convenience. It's that simple. I don't think scalpers get all of the tickets today. If you want to pay face, go stand in line and get 32nd row seats. (That's not too bad !). Or, pay $150 more with no hassle and no time for a pair of 4th row floor seats. I'll take option B any day. It's worth it to me, as my time is valuable. Lastly, I get a kick out of how p*** people get at the idea of anyone profiting from selling tickets. I'll use my home example again. Say I buy a home in a nice area, it appreciates, I sell it for the highest offer I get. That's been part of U.S. business for hundreds of years. If someone buys tickets in the 4th row which are worth more than others, they sell them at a higher price, people want to make him or her walk the plank ! I fail to see the difference and if there are any, they are very subtle. Anyway, sorry to disagree with the common opinion here, but I like having the option of using a ticket broker / scalper. Just don't like some people assuming all of us Parrotheads are aganist ticket brokering. Most every serious Parrothead I know has paid a premium to get the really good seats and never complain about that. As I said, I am thrilled to be seeing Jimmy from the 4th row for an extra $150 ! Serious question: Would pay that and be happy, knowing you spent no time whatsoever obtaining the tickets. Most serious Parrotheads wouldn't blink ! Take care and Fins Up !

Pot should be legal as it as not as dangerous as alcohol. It is a true victimless crime.
However there are many victims when tickets are scalped. The biggest victim being the fan, then the artist and their band and suport crews. Not only is it illegal it is immoral.
You know if you've read all of the posts and pros and cons you would know that we've been there - done that.
The only reason I answered was that I believe that pot should be legal.

Fire one up for me ! Ticket scalping is not illegal in most states and it is certainly not immoral. No more immoral than brokering anything else. I'm not a ticket broker. I just like using their services...it saves me time and hassle and I'm always able to get good to great Buffett tickets for often not much more than face value. That small premium is well worth not standing in line, trying to get through to Ticketmaster, etc. I honestly cannot for the life of me understand some of my fellow Parrotheads on this topic. I don't get the "victims" - the fan, the artist and the band. Funny story... I was at the MGM pre-party in Vegas for my last Buffett concert in September. One of the cover bands playing at the event with Buffett-like music was on a break. The drummer was sitting on the side of the stage scalping really good seats ! I guess as a band member he would disagree with you that the band are victims ! Nor did about 8 Parrotheads who bought those tickets - which he no doubt got through the Buffett organization. Lastly, I love Buffett as much as anyone - trust me - but let's look at reality. This guy is one of the richest guys on the music circuit. The face value of the tickets I bought in Vegas were $300 a pair (and I paid more than that). According to a newspaper article later in the year, that was one of the highest grossing concerts of any band all year. Everyone wants to think Buffett is some beach dude riding down to Key West in some old Packard and doesn't care about money. Wrong. The guy sues anyone who even mentions anything he is involved with. He sued a newspaper in North Carolina because they published an ad which stated "Where Margaritaville meets Nantucket" for a beach development. He sued a Parrothead for printing fake "Bank of Bad Habits" credit cards as a joke (see Buffetcom.com book). Let's get real, fellow Parrotheads. His music is great and he should be paid a lot. But to say he and only he can make money...and no one else profits from his music is moronic. I go back to my previous examples which no one has ever refuted. How is ticket brokering different than using a broker for anything else ? It isn't. If I get say first row seats and sell them for a profit is no different than being at the right place and time
and buying a great house in a great location. If I turn around and sell that house and make a profit, no one complains. It's the American way. If someone does that with tickets, its immoral. The fact is this: the demand for tickets to good artists like Bubba will always exceed demand. To get those tickets, you can rely on a hit or miss approach with Ticketmaster (I have been skunked more often than I care to recall!) or I can pay a small premium for someone else to do it for me and I can always get tickets. When tickets go on sale, I don't even bother anymore. I wait until about 2 - 3 weeks before the concert, then check eBay and 100% of the time I get great seats for close to face and sometimes less. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO DO THAT, otherwise we have no choice but to try to play the ticket game and many of us will lose and never see another Buffett concert. A friend of mine got front row Jeff Beck tickets in Phoenix recently for .01. Anyway, Fins Up ! and thanks for listening to another view point. The only reason I write is I don't want everyone assuming all Parrotheads are against Ticket brokering, cause some of us are certainly not ! Take care...

Very, very nicely done Well Duh!! I agree with you whole heartedly. I would absolutely LOVE to be close enough to see Bubba's toes, to have a chance at catching a wristband, or even getting zonked right between the eyes by a beach ball launched from Bubba's foot. This will probably never happen because of scalpers and those who choose to purchase their tickets from them. Even though I absolutely adore Jimmy and his music, I would MUCH rather purchase tickets by regular means and be seatd half way back up on the side of the arena than buy tickets from a scalper and be five feet away from him. I will continue to cross my fins for all the other Parrotheads as well as myself...that we do somehow manage to get excellent seats for the shows that we attend. Good night all, see you in da mornin'.

You have written three long posts to try and plead your case here, but I'm afriad you're just barking up the wrong tree.
If I had to guess, I would say that most of the folks here could easily pay scalper prices... we just refuse to. Unfortunately there are still enough people who don't care about anyone other than themselves, and they continue to patronize brokers. If there was a nationwide, anti-scalping law, that was ENFORCED, then those good seats would be accessible to ALL.

K, Caribbean Soul. Live and let live. I'm done my preaching (well, almost). No one has EVER refuted my arguments (how is this different than any other type of brokering -- just keep repeating the same tired phrases (immoral, different et. al.), so I'll declare that a win in my mind (don't we all do that !).
The truth is this: if there was a nationwide, anti-scalping law that was enforced, because the demand greatly exceeds supply, the only way to get tickets would still be playing the Ticketmaster game. We all know how that works...you lose way more often than win. Kind of like a poorly run lottery. Even with no scalpers, what you kind folks fail to realize is you STILL wouldn't be able to get tickets as the demand is way too great with Parrotheads alone (Good seats would NOT be accessible to all, as you surmise). Hey, its your choice...if you don't want to buy from Ticket Brokers...don't. I have done that for virtually ever Buffett concert and will continue to do so.
On 3/15 I'll be on the floor 4 rows from the stage. I'll bring my binoculars to see if I can spot any of you no scalper folks in the rafters. I bet, in reality, you spent more time and money (assuming your time is worth any money) getting your seats than I did too. It took me 5 minutes and $150 extra to get these seats. I bet all you affluent folks who could EASILY pay that would in 5 seconds, despite your comments here.
A word to Well Duh: Hey Man, my goal isn't to impress you folks or seek sympathy, just simply to express an opinion. But, you all don't want to hear another point of view apparently (I kind of thought that was the whole premise of a public posting area - where we Parrotheads could talk frankly). Guess not !
Anyway, Best wishes, take care and Fins Up !

Well, anonymous 143.199.125.10 -- I'll give you credit for being pleasant in tone, and everybody's entitled to their opinion, which you expressed. Having said that, I don't think you'll find a lot of sympathy around here for supporting scalpers. To each his own, but, if this practice did not go on, those of us who have some insistence upon procuring tickets through regular means might have a snowball's chance in hell of actually getting good seats. You want to know how many times, in twenty years, I've had good seats?? Got decent seats due to fracturing my kneecap & qualifying for the crip zone (not willing to do that again) & through the largesse of someone connected to the tour. Let's face it: the good seats don't go on sale on ticketmaster, and, well, wheeeeee you, you're willing to pay for someone to do things for you......trust me, I'm an affluent person who is willing to have a maid come in every week to do things I don't want to do, and, moreover, I would PAY someone to run errands for me, so I'm somewhat sympathetic to your premise, but, I have to say: this is different and everybody ought to have a chance to get great tickets. I just think scalping is wrong.
And, uh, one other note: around here, people aren't all that impressed with people who post as anonymous.

B-S Parrothead,
If that is not "some fake screen name", I would be happy to send your momma an extra baby name book we have in the office.
It is apparent YOU do not want to hear about others' points of view. WD and CS expressed their opinions why they feel scalping tickets should be illegal. They did not attack you personally as you did them. For someone who questions if others' time is worth any money, you certainly have "spent" an awful lot of yours rhetorically.
I think there are two different topics being discussed as one. From what you have described, you are paying a small premium or "finder's fee" from an agency that aquires tickets for all types of events and re-sells them.
I consider "scalping" those who purchase a few tickets and then sell them with an outrageous markup. I was offered $80 seats for $250. THAT is not brokering, that's bona fide rape.

Captain Toni (the real one whom I have met personally two times),
I do feel personally attacked for expressing my opinion on tickets (read their comments again and see if you don't draw the same conclusion, including your comments, i.e. your Momma). Man, over the last 25 years I thought I knew Parrotheads through about 15 to 20 concerts and MOTM events, but apparently not (or the ones I hang out with are a different breed). I have carefully read other's concerns and, as I've tried to explain, I look at it differently, as many Parrothead friends of mine do, and was only trying to point out the differences in thinking and that not every Parrothead is aganist scalping as a practice. Scalping is NOT illegal in most states (it is in some unfortunately, but not California where I live - I'm thrilled it isn't). This is my last posting here (and I'm quite confident you all will be crying in your beer over that !) as you all want to live in some fantasy-type land where you apparently don't agree with the basic economic principals of supply and demand. You probably do for most things but somehow distinguish tickets as a different commodity, beyond eveything else in the world. Bad news: tickets are a commodity like everything else. And, STILL, no one has refuted or stated why this is different than any other brokering. I have to pay a 7% real estate commission to sell my house (i.e. LOTS of money - $94,150 on my last house here in California and no problem). A scalper who waits in line for 8 hours to buy tickets want to charge $150 for his or her efforts and then you guys want to hang the SOB ! You are blaming your difficulties on obtaining Buffett tickets on scalpers. That just isn't the case. If there were no scalpers, you STILL wouldn't get tickets as the demand exceeds the supply, from Parrotheads alone. You would be totally left up with the Ticetmaster lottery joke with no other options. Today, if you want to play that game, you can -- and sometimes you win and snag some good seats. If scalping is banned, you'll still play the same game, losing more often than winning. If you lose, you are screwed as tickets won't be available from other sources (as they are today). I wish you guys peace (sincerely). Life is short...I'm listening to Jimmy, buying my tickets from brokers who help and not sweating the rest. I'd encourage you to try it sometime. Before I was ever in the first 5 rows of a concert, I didn't understand. About 10 years ago, an old Parrothead (who has since passed away) told me once you are up-front you'll never go back. He'd spend $500 bucks on an up-front ticket and not blink. I'm quite confident, he's somewhere on the ocean now standing back with his hand on the starboard rail glad he did. I'm going to spend a few more bucks and do the same thing. Take Care... (Call me names or whatever, I am out of here... True Parrotheads would eat s*** on a shingle to have an up-close experience with Bubba. I count myself among them. You folks squint from the lawn...I'm going to be down front).
Never again, B-S Parrothead

True Parrotheads would eat s*** on a shingle to have an up-close experience with Bubba. I count myself among them. You folks squint from the lawn...I'm going to be down front).
Never again, B-S Parrothead

BS Parrothead (how appropriate that sounds!),
You should really spend some of that ticket money on learning basic reading comprehensive skills.
"...your momma..." was in response to YOUR statement to WD (have someone else read it to you and see if you can understand it then). I have refuted your statement, you just can't comprehend that or choose to live in your own fantasy land where you would like to believe others haven't refuted you. You say you thought you knew parrotheads, maybe the ones attached to parrot bodies, live in tropical locations, and whose manner of speaking is repeating back to you what you say to them. Yes, we are a "different breed" than those. We articulate our own thoughts and opinions, not just repeat back what we have been told.
Just one last request; don't let that door hit you on the way out.

Well, I said never again...but I can't help myself in light of your personal and unwarranted attack. Capt. Toni, you are no Parrothead -- despite parading around like one (you are more likely a drunk just like Capt. Tony and thus are using an appropriate screen name). I know Parrotheads and many, many of them and have for 20+ years, and they are not on the attack and nasty, as you are. They are mellow and enjoy life and appreciate different points of view and generally want to have fun and not attack others, as you are attacking me for simply expressing an opinion which you don't agree with.
I have met Jimmy personally in Sag's Harbor last year and have been an avid fan for as many years as I can recall. There isn't much I don't know about the man or his music.
In terms of your personal attack on me with respect to my poor reading ability,I have an MBA from Stanford and a J.D. and started a software Company in the Silicon Valley when I was in my 20's which I sold 4 years ago for $11 million. I suspect my annual tax bill far exceeds your lifetime earnings. Thanks for your comments on my reading abilities. I know how to read pro-forma statements and investment reports. That seems to get me by OK. Want to compare your likely $10 an hour position and $1000 in your 401(k) and beer cans in the back of your pickup truck ? Does my success (notwithstanding my lack of reading abilities)eliminate me being a Parrothead ? Absolutely not. Buffett is worth a tad more than me and I know many wealthy Parrotheads.
You have NOT refuted my statements -- because you cannot. You just keep repeating the boorish statements that Ticket Brokering is immoral, illegal and a bunch of other nonsense which is false. It is a supply and demand issue as I've said numerous times. NO ONE has said why this is different than any other commodity or any other brokering.
Look: You can pound sand as far as I'm concerned. I'm sick of trying to shine a fashlight through a brick wall on this issue. Listen, Putz, you keep trying to buy tickets through the regular channels and you will lose most everytime, not because of scalpers, but because the demand from Parrotheads exceeds the demand. Stop blaming scalpers for your ticket difficulties. Get out of the 1960's (tickets can only be sold for face value) and into the 2000's where tickets everywhere, for any event are commodities (if you can put down your beer for a moment to consider that).
You don't own this site and I'll respond as long as you continue to sling crap against me personally.
I've tried to express my opinions nicely. It is discouraging to be met with such a negative personal attack from a supposed Parrothead.
You might try to listen and maybe you can dig yourself out of whatever hole which makes you a mean and nasty individual...

The Captain Tony I met was a an older man in Key West a long time ago, there Mrs... P.S. There was no Mrs. in any of your previous screen names, so don't blame that, once again, on my terrible reading skills. God, you really are sad... Of course, Capt. Tony was well-known for sleeping around a lot with all sorts of Women and I use that term loosely, in all seriousness, so maybe you ARE one of his wives (probably for about 30 minutes)... He has been quoted, as you may know, that one of the requirements of a happy life is an enormous sexual appetite...You probably do have a good screen name.

Ahoy Anon - If your lucky , these people will quit talking to you , like they did me. You might have caught my earlier posts. I look forward to chating with you. This IS a public site, and you are ALWAYS welcome to post here, even if your views differ, from say, about only a dozen people.

I have stayed out of this discussion for a very long time, believing that I do not have enough facts to argue the point that ticket brokers are either legal or illegal (and for fear that I too will be personally attacked for my feelings). But now I need to say my piece, because it is how I feel. I cannot understand how anyone can defend either ticketbastard OR any ticket broker (legal or otherwise). The fact of the matter is this. Ticket brokers buy up thousands of concert tickets, rendering the hundreds of thousands of the general public defenseless in their battle to get through the ticketmaster lottery and phone lines. Then these same brokers sell those tickets to these people who stood in line, for hours, maybe in the cold or rain, hoping, just hoping to get tickets, at a price that most people consider highway robbery. I have seen quoted many times in this thread, "If you want to see Jimmy Buffett bad enough, you'll pay the price". NO, I WON'T. I CAN'T. Maybe the people out there with "JD"s and 11 Mill in their petty cash drawers can afford to, but I cannot. If I did, I would have to skip a car payment, or a student loan pay payment just to make up for it. Two years ago, I had a group of nearly 30 of my closest friends with me at the show (he only played one night that year). Last spring, only 9 of us were able to get tickets (and there were 2 shows to choose from). Between the ticketmaster monopoly lottery and who knows how many thousands of tickets sold to brokers, 20 of my friends lost out on their chance to see Jimmy Buffett last year. Instead of the rented party-bus that we had planned, we had 2 car loads. It just wasn't what we looked forward to since the summer before. How fair is that? If ticket brokering was made illegal, or at least policed or regulated somehow, more of us would have had that chance to get tickets last year. All us regular folk want is a chance to see Jimmy Buffett at the price that he set for the tickets. If people continue to buy into the ticket broker's supply and demand scenario, soon there will be no tickets left to the general public. And if ticket brokers are allowed to continue their practice, the only tickets out there would be astronomical in price. That would be a travesty. Any of you out there who have bought from brokers and scalpers, you are not helping anyone. There is no need to attack anyone for having a different point of view. It just seems that the pro-broker people refuse to understand what upsets us about their attitude toward this issue. I have come to say what I wanted, and I hope that I have not offended anyone personally. That being said, capt.toni- If I know the kind of person you are, you will not even dignify that last legalese-bastard's completely uncalled for, unfounded and ridiculously low-down, scumbag, pondslime, enquirer-tabloid remarks with a response.

Ah nothing like a heathly dose of mudslinging.
Perhaps the real issue here is not the legitimacy of brokers, but the collusion between the brokers and the promoters with holdbacks and other scams to keep tickets out of the market and into the brokers pocket. one post talked about a broker standing in line and getting his 8 tickets and then selling them to make a buck. HA! NO BROKER HAS EVER STOOD IN LINE TO BUY TICKETS! Then add in the sponsor/corporate tickets, and nationwide availability of tickets, no wonder people have a hard time getting one let alone a good one.

Mr. Scott, A TRUE Parrothead. Fins Up !
Hi Burgh Bird, Geez -- I haven't been called pondslime in a long time (legalese-bastard, more recently, however !). A couple quick points: 1) I am the one being attacked. Read my first 2 or 3 posts. I nicely and kindly expressed my opinion and then the nut-cases (the Mrs. primarily) starting personally attacking ME (and not my views). It is OK to attack my views, but not me personally for expressing them. Wouldn't you agree ? However, I was not raised to sit back and get thumped on by some moron without a response, thus my "low-down" response.
2) OK, my money has nothing to do with my view here. I was buying scalped tickets when I didn't have 2 nickels to rub together, cause I love Buffett.
3) You make one big mistake in your premise: ticket brokers buy up "thousands of tickets" that would otherwise go to plain old regular Parrotheads. There are, as I'm sure you know, ticket limits for each and every concert (usually 4). I'm sure the tickets dweebs get around that a bit, but not much. No way is TB going to send 100's of tickets to one person for one concert. Plus the concerts sell-out often in a matter of a few minutes so there is no way they can get that many tickets. Now, you assume all of these scalped tickets go for big prices. Wrong ! Some do, of course. Most go for a relatively small premium over face, especially for those not in the first 10 rows (but still great). Look at www.ebay.com right now, search under jimmy buffett oakland and see. There is one first row pair for $500 and the rest are very, very reasonable - some LESS than face. You don't have to miss a car payment to use a scalper.
5) I view it as a service. Don't wait in the cold or rain. Don't even worry about tickets on the first day of sale. Wait until about 3 weeks before the concert and I guarantee you you can get reasonable tickets to any Buffett concert anywhere for close to face, thanks to your friendly Ticket Broker. I use the Oakland concert as proof.
6)Eliminating scalping, once again, will NOT take away your ticket woes. Too many Parrotheads. You'll have trouble getting tickets anyway. The demand exceeds the supply.
Enquirer-tabloid remarks. That is low ! Take Care...
