By buying an album or two. If you don't own any, you can't be collecting...Tomsailedaway wrote:what is the best way to start collecting

I went to two Goodwills so far. Nothing at the first one whatsoever. I didn't find anything at the second JB wise, through I did get Elton John's Honky Chateau at the second just today for only $1.
I have a question for anyone who has purchased records at Goodwill. The record I got from there today has the top right corner of the jacket chopped off. My brother tells me threft stores do this so the albums lose their value. I can't remember if all the other albums there had it, but I don't think so. So the question is, does anyone have any albums from such shops that have cut corners on the jackets? If this is true, I'm probably going to have to stop useing threft shops as a venue. True, they are only a buck and it dosen't matter if you only buy a few, but I don't want to bulid up a whole collection that's like that.

You might try antique shops or consignment shops.
It is so much fun to look at all the other albums for sale also.
on the internet...there is platterpus.com also. I have had good dealings with them.
Libraries used to have vinyl. I'm not sure if our local library still has vinyl or not. You could check them out and listen to them in the past.

It's pretty much hit-and-miss with any of these options. Persistance is the key. With e-bay, you go in knowing what you can get, but there is no guarantee you're getting it. The hunt can be fun...
Just last week, I went into a used record store and found a vinyl copy of the "Urban Cowboy" soundtrack!!!!!! I don't have "Hello Texas" in any form, so I was going to buy it. Took it to the front, she opened it up to inspect it, and one of the two records was missing!!!! Guess which one?

Used record stores, collectible stores and flea markets are good places to get used (obviously) albums. Let them know that you are interested in everything and anything Buffett. They will give you a call when something new comes in. It has worked for me.
As mentioned above e-bay is best for good condition stuff.

I made my start on Ebay and bought a lot of 8 records or so. Ever since, I hit up Goodwills and Salvation Army's looking for the records (be prepared for more Barry Manilow records than you knew existed). Its really hit or miss, but a hit can sometimes be a goldmine. If you are lucky enough to have a Parrothead donate their lot of records, you're likely to find 5-6 at a time. I've had that happen several times. I've got a lot of duplicates (and even triplicates, ok not a word) of a lot of his LP's. Would love to trade for ones I don't have.
These Include:
Off To See The Lizard
Hot Water
Rancho Deluxe
High Cumberland Jubilee
Down To Earth
I know the last 3 are rare, but I'm hopeful to find the first couple.

Another obsticle you have to consider for Buffett's as well as many other records is that it's the first pressing. I'm hesitant to go ask someone else to look for me, because I know with my luck they will end up getting a later pressing, of let's say for example Living and Dying in 3/4 Time. And it's not like the pressing difference is just an alternate number on the package somewhere. If you were to pick up the MCA issue of 3/4 Time and not the ABC/Dunhill original, you would not be getting the lyrics and copywrite info for each song. Not only that, but you would miss out on the eye candy painting by Richard Bibby, printed in the gatefold. This goes for just about everyone of JB's old albums. I'm going to bet MCA did the same thing with all the other previously ABC/Dunhill owned albums that they aquired upon the purchase of the company.
Apparently, no one ever told MCA that the information printed on the packaging was put there for a reason, but we all know that.
Back on the subject of collecting, I have to agree with the Barry Manilow overload that you find in those bins. After going through many of Manilows, Englebert Humperdinks, some Spanish crap and other junk, I was surprised to find a copy of Honky Chateau at the Goodwill. Sure it was a far cry from mint, but for a dollar, how can one be picky?
