And at Larry's age, it's an accomplishment to leave the house with his own dentures, let alone his own pants. :D

a REAL post...

(“un-hijacking” this therad because I have something serious to say… )

I have found some good buys a Wal-Mart. For example, last month I got Van Morrison’s Moondance for only $8. Many of JB’s CDs can also be found there for that price. But still, while you do get lucky every now and then, I don’t recommend Wal-Mart for searching for back catalogue albums. I do really hate buying CDs for more than $12 bucks, just two weeks ago I had to shell out $15 for Brian Wilson’s Smile! (not that it isn’t well worth it, but come on Brian, do you really need the $?) The place that probably has the worst selection is Target. If it’s not a greatest hits compilation or the latest album, forget it.

I feel guilty buying CDs anywhere other than an independently owned record shop. I just can't buy music at Best Buy anymore and I've never purchased a CD at Wal-Mart. I broke down and bought Outkast at Virgin, but that was because I was in desperate need to dance at lunchtime, and that was the closest place I could get a CD at that time. Otherwise, I always go to the indie shops because I feel like I should do what I can to keep them in business.

I feel the same way but in my area indie shops have been completely edged out by the big chains. :( Thankfully, they still thrive in other areas of the state and are often the only place I can find quite a few of the artists I listen to.

I too find it difficult to purchase CDs, books, etc. from the national chains. I prefer to support my local independent merchants who in turn support my business and my community. I may pay a little more upfront yet I get far more back in terms of service and attention. For example, when did Wal-mart get a rare LP (yes, I collect vinyl) in and hold it for you knowing that you would be interested in it. And then instead of selling it to you, they give it to you since you've been a loyal customer. Also the local merchants support our local listener supported community radio station whereas the nationals ignore it. Therefore I won't support the big chains.

that brings up a good question. How far would you travel to go to an indipendent owned record store? For me i'd say i wouldn't go too far out of my way, but if i saw one somewhere and if i had time i might pull over and check it out.

They have a terrible selection, but for new releases they have the best prices. For example When "When The Sun Goes Down" by K*nny Ch*sney came out ( i feel that i must edit this name inorder not to upset anyone  ) I got it at target for 9 bucks, and it was the Special edition too, with all of the Bonus tracks, and the Target Exclusive bonus CD w/ the cover of "Come Monday"

If they want to lower their own prices that's their business. They should not be allowed to dictate profit margins for their vendors and competitors.

Everything's expensive in NY so I shop at whatever store is most convenient. That's usually FYE (formerly Coconuts) because it's less than 2 blocks from my office and I can walk there at lunchtime.

I wish there were more indie stores to support here. I can't even think of one now. There was a GREAT one near where I lived growing up but it has now been out of business for 10 years or so. A great selection of music, patches, posters. I always went there and never would have considered going anywhere else to buy music (especially when I had excess cash to do so).

Now it is simply a matter of convenience and where I am when I have money to spend. It's usually Target. If I'm with hubby, it's most likely Best Buy because he LOVES to go there.

If there was a small business I knew of nearby, I probably would support it.

It depends. The closest indie is probably a little over an hour away but I doubt I would drive that far just for one record. I have done mail order through there before and ordering online is also an option. I just got a shipment in from SirenDisc.com who's S & H rates are very reasonable.

When I used to DJ'd in nightclubs and private parties I only bought my stuff thru a local indie store because they used to give me a discount and could order me any things that I wanted. Now I usually will but at either Best Buy or Circuit City just because of the price. I think almost all the independent stores have shut down since almost everywhere you go there is either a Walmart, Best Buy or Circuit City. The last indie store that I know off went out of business about a year ago and the were selling CD's for $15-$18 a piece.

I will admit to buying from chains, but do everything I can to avoid shopping at Wal-Mart. Between what they have done to small towns, and the previously discussed issue of their censorship (which extends way beyond just music) I would rather not support them in any way.

I purchase a lot of cds direct from the artists. Either thru websites od at shows. Most Independent music is hard to find at a Wal Mart type retailer. I probably wouldn't waste my money on 95% of the cds that Walmart stocks.

Well maybe they shouldn't be allowed to do that, but as long as the prices are low than i'll keep on comming back, and so will most people. Plus, i was talking about Target, not WalMart.
