Goodman's Great Moments in Buffett History I
We all know JB's affinity for covering the Grateful Dead, Bruce Cockburn and Steve Goodman, but when have artists bigger than JB covered him?
The best instance I can think of was the summer of 1982(?) in California when at a anti-nuke rally Bob Dylan & Joan Baez covered "A Pirate Looks at Forty". I have heard a poor quality recording which convinced me that Bob should stick to his own tunes. The rendition was terrible but nevertheless qualifies as a great moment in Buffett History.

I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

I downloaded a version of Pirate Looks at 40 live by Jack Johnson. It is fantastic! But, then I like Jack Johnson a lot--and I wouldn't consider him bigger than Jimmy. To this BIG!!!...no one is bigger than Jimmy!VB for Buffett wrote:Even though he is not bigger than Jimmy I will say it any way
Jack Johnson recorded A Pirate Looks at Forty as the first song on his CD September Sessions. The version is very good and I would not mind if he covered any more of JB'S songs.

Great Moments
Well friends and neighbors you never can tell where a thread will go on the internet. It was my hope we'd deal with the weirdness of Dylan and Baez covering JB. Here's a little more in the way of facts:
... Peace Sunday, Rose Bowl, Los Angeles 6/6/82 w/Joan Baez: GodOnOurSide*,
APirateLooksAt40* (Jimmy Buffett), & Blowin'*. Audience recording. ...

Yes, he did. I *think* it's on his From Willie To Lefty album. Speaking of Kenny Rogers, I remember seeing him cover one of the tunes from A1A (sorry, can't think of the exact song right off the top of my head) on some variety show way back in the 70s. Maybe the Kenny/Buffett connection has something to with their time in the New Christy Minstrels.conched wrote:Willie Nelson did Railroad Lady...I thinkI hate to go look, but it seems like I remember that.

actually, Bob should just stick to writing music and letting others with more talent actually perform it. Whatever half-wit convinced him, "No, really Bob, don't worry about that nasally-inability-to-hit-or-hold-a-note. Go on out there and do your own songs!!" should be beaten with a brick in a burlap bag until they come apart.Goodman wrote:We all know JB's affinity for covering the Grateful Dead, Bruce Cockburn and Steve Goodman, but when have artists bigger than JB covered him?

Isn't Willie the most famous? WWWD?
Let's give credit where credit is due. Jimmy co-wrote that with his good friend Jerry Jeff Walker.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I apologize in advance for going off subject, so if that bothers you don't read, but since we're talking about covering songs... I heard a fantastic cover of Hotel California at a free concert Friday in our little town by a garage band called Radar Jones. http://radarjones.com This band is going somewhere, and this could be their hit. Never heard it sung the way they did... real bluesy and folksy, so only the lyrics sounded familiar. You heard it here first.

I saw Jack Johnson for the first time this summer - awesome!!!! It seemed very much like a Buffett crowd, except 25 years youngerconched wrote:I downloaded a version of Pirate Looks at 40 live by Jack Johnson. It is fantastic! I'd love to hear his version of APL@40, I'll have to find September Sessions, thanks for the heads up.
