Ask yourself what you did on Columbus day, or Labor day, or MLK day?
I know I am guilty of turning any day off into a ong weekend away from home.
Columbus Day and MLK Day I worked, just like I worked President's Day and I'll work Veterans' Day. They're federal holidays but they're not holidays at the firm where I work.

I dont know how I would vote on a weekday - as I have to work ... how do people who work vote on a Tuesday? Especially with those long lines I have seen on tv .... I have never lined up ....

Creeky, you live in a country that takes the day off for a horse race. I don't think the Australian government would have a problem with closing down for election day. :P

I work for the Australian Government and I had to go to work yesterday (for the horse race). The only people that close down is in the state of Victoria for the Cup. I get my "extra" gazetted public holiday in March for our own local thing. Each Australian worker is entitled to so many public holidays a year and one of those is for a "regional" holiday .....

so there :P

I don't believe so.
You don't even get 50% turnout normally. This election is truly an exception.
That's not just because they don't have time to vote, it's also because they don't care enough. I find it pathetic that a country with citizens that have the priviledge to participate in a democratic process...DON'T.

Unless, we had tracking devices implanted that MANDATE your participation :o
there isn't much point in giving slackers a paid day off.
