SEATTLE -- A Bellevue lawyer was shot and critically injured in the parking lot outside his quiet suburban office Wednesday, and police detained a former Snohomish County deputy prosecutor.
Kevin Y. Jung, a prominent lawyer among local Koreans, suffered at least one gunshot wound after he pulled his Lexus sedan into the parking lot Wednesday morning, Bellevue police said. He was in critical condition Wednesday night at Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue.
Witnesses reported the shooter's description and license plate number to officers, who tracked the plates through a rental agency to the former Snohomish County deputy prosecutor. Everett police picked up the man and turned him over to Bellevue officers. He remained in custody for questioning and further investigation Wednesday night, but he had not been booked into jail.
The suspect, a former fighter pilot with the Air Force, worked in the prosecutor's office from 1991-2000, said Mark Roe, the office's chief criminal deputy prosecutor. He handled some felonies but no high-profile cases.
Since leaving the prosecutor's office, he has been in private practice in suburban Mill Creek, where he did civil and criminal defense work, Roe said.
The former prosecutor was due to face Jung Wednesday morning in a contempt hearing in a civil case, the Herald of Everett reported.
Jung represented the plaintiffs and was asking Snohomish County Court Commissioner Lester Stewart to sanction the defense for failing to respond to requests for information in a lawsuit involving two couples, Stewart told the Herald.
When they didn't show up "I thought they'd resolved it," Stewart said, adding that he'd seen the two in court on the same case several months ago and there was no apparent animosity.
"Everybody here thinks of him as a gentleman and a nice guy." Roe said of the former prosecutor. "A lot of people who worked with (him), they're just speechless. When I told them what happened, they were certain I was telling a joke that wasn't very funny."
According to the Washington State Bar Association, Jung focused his practice on international business, real estate and immigration law. He regularly travels to Seoul, where he has a liaison office.
He has represented some of the largest Korean multinational corporations, including the Samsung Group.
More recently, he represented Kwang Ja "Annie" Chung, a domestic violence victim who was stabbed to death by her husband in a murder-suicide at the couple's North Bend sushi restaurant last week.
Bellevue Police spokesman Michael Chiu declined to say whether investigators believe that crime is related to Jung's shooting.
