Once you figure this out, you will feel really stupid.
Three traveling salesman check into a hotel room that costs $60. After they go to their room, the manager realized that the room only costs $55, and he accidentally overcharged them by $5. He gives the bellboy $5 and directs him to take it to the room.
On the way up to the room, the bellboy realizes that he cannot divide $5 evenly among the three men. Needing a few bucks for dinner himself, he decides to give $1 each to the three men and keep the remaining $2 himself as a tip.
BUT, WAIT A MINUTE!! The three men had paid $19 each for the room ($20-$1 received in change). The $57 the men paid ($19 each times three) plus the $2 the bellboy had kept for himself makes $59. What happened to the other buck?

Three into 60 is 20...????????????? They paid $20 each, right? And the tax....what about the tax?

They paid $60, it's supposed to be $55. They each get a dollar back, $55 + $3 = $58. The bell boy keeps $2, $58 + $2 = $60.

Good job! Someone sent this to my dad in an e-mail, and he immediately threw his hands up in the air and handed it to me. I had to get a pen and paper and draw it out, but it took me about fifteen minutes to figure it out.
Like IsleReef said, the wording is what throws you off. The total that it mentions includes the tip already, and then they add the tip to get to $59.

That still doesn't explain this though

20 + 20 + 20 = 60
20 + 20 + 20 = 55 +1 +1 +1 +2
19 + 19 + 19 = 55 + 2
57 = 57
TA DA !!!
They each paid $18.33 towards the room plus $0.67 towards the tip.
(18.33 x 3) + (.67 x 3) = $57

yea but 19 + 19+ 19 = 55 + 2 < 60

The statement confuses you with the 'percieved' amount they payed ($19 each) with the actual amount they payed ($55/3 each). Then adds in the actual amount the bellboy kept.

Right...They each paid 19 which = 57....55 for the room + 2 for the tip...
57 Plus the dollar they each still have = 60
57 +1 +1 +1 = 60

This is the "deceiving" part...
The $2 the bellboy kept is part of the $57 paid...
So it should be 57 - 2
NOT 57 + 2

Imagine you are in a sinking rowboat surrounded by sharks. How would you survive?
