what college did you go to?

Post by OceanCityGirl »

I only went to the cheapy local state school. But I"m doing the college search for my son. He wants to run in a D1 school and has the ability unless it's one of the top programs in the county. He's been contacted by a few coaches and done recruiting visits. So give me your best plug for your alma mater.
Requirements - he's going to be an english/history major or a phys ed major with an eye to teaching so most schools fit this bill. He's not a top notch student so it can't be a high level ivy league or anything like that. Oh, and cost does matter, track scholarships are few and far between. It's likely he'll get some money but not a full ride unless the program graduated alot of seniors this year. Other then that, we're open. When we get to a top 20 list I"m sure I'll have some more requirements. Thanks if you help.

Jacksonville University grad 1972
Univ of Fla Pharmacy School grad 1988

Unless you're "in state", UF probably costs as much as any.

JU is private and is not cheap. It provides an excellent education
as opposed to the big research machines though. Undergrads
count for nothing but tuition dollars at the big schools, and if a
strong learning experience is desirable, I'd direct you to smaller
schools.

Regarding $$$, remember that most financial aid will be
granted regardless of grades and based on "need" which
will take the cost of the program you've been accepted to
into account. Get in contact with the financial aid office at
the most desirable school he's likely to be accepted at and
see what they say. You may be pleasantly surprised.

He definitely would prefer a southern school. Likes running better in the heat then the snow. Looked into FSU and had some chats with coach but they are phenomenal. It's still a possibility but I don't know. Depends on times for the last two races. I think we also looked at Uof F and that they're prices weren't so bad. Most southern schools have lower tuitions due to less heating cost. Husband was laid off twice this year and the only good thing about it is that it lowered our income for when it's time to apply for aid packages.

We graduated together, as best I recall. Does
that make me even more special? I've seen him
around town occationally through the years. He
definitely wears nice, custom-made suits. His son
attended JU at the same time as our youngest. He
liked hanging around with our boy's fraternity, but
never pledged. His mom and the coach didn't like
the idea.

I also remember Pembrook Burrows accidentally
wandering into a math class I was in "back in the
day". Hard to hide your mistake when you're over
7 ft tall! He ended up being on the Fla Highway
Patrol. Bet he didn't get much lip from speeders.

Take a look at Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD.
It's a small school with a strong AD and they support their students and athletes with generous scholarships.

(and just to confuse matters, there's also St. Mary's College of Maryland)

Wouldn't mounting St. Mary be some kind of sacrilege?

Mount St. Mary's is at the top of his list. He's already been on a recruitment visit. I loved it. The coach was great. The classes are small which is good for my son as I worry about the transition. They are talking money but want to see his winter track times first.
He's also being recruited by UMBC.
