Jack Johnson covers "Pirate Looks @ 40"
exclusivley through iTunes, hawaiian singer-songwriter Jack Johnson covered Pirate Looks @ 40 on his iTunes Originals session. It can be purchases through iTunes for 99cents i believe, its well worth the buck
It is very much so. I found it at his homepage. That a few others.

i think this is actually a different version from the iTunes one, the iTunes one was live in the studio and this was live at a private concert(?)

what i find ridiculous though, is that in the iTunes original, he says "i don't think i've ever actually heard the Jimmy Buffett version of this song, but i've heard Keff Pike's [who is that?] version about a million times, and he tought me all sorts of great buffett songs . . . . "
how could you cover a song which you've never even heard the original verision of? that makes no sense

The guy's name is Jeff Pike. He is part of A1A band with Scott Nickerson...I think they were the first Buffett Tribute band I heard back in the early days at MotM.DsilCaribe wrote:what i find ridiculous though, is that in the iTunes original, he says "i don't think i've ever actually heard the Jimmy Buffett version of this song, but i've heard Keff Pike's [who is that?] version about a million times, and he tought me all sorts of great buffett songs . . . . Did anyone ever find out if Jimmy was Jack's father's friend from way back?

Well that was an interesting thread, I agree. I do see the link to Jack being the newer generation of Buffett although not quite. He does lack the buffettesque energy but even being laid back, he can sing a great songline and I love his accoustical work. Brushfire fairytales is a great album, and I'd also say not a bad song on there.

I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing since that's totally up to the listener but Faith Hill covered Janis Joplin's Ball and Chain a few years ago without ever having heard the original. I imagine there's others that have done the same but that's the first example I could think of.DsilCaribe wrote:how could you cover a song which you've never even heard the original verision of? that makes no sense

This is the song that made me a Jimmy fan in the 70's. I have to say, I am underwelmed. Sounds like the "Lounge Lizard" version I heard at an Orlando Holiday Inn with my inlaws

I haven't heard Jack Johnson's version of the song but I did catch parts of his show at the Austin City Limits Music Festival a couple years ago while taking in a set by Tim Easton (you could hear the bleedover from both Jack and the Polyphonic Spree). To say he was so laid back he makes Dave Matthews look like Angus Young is an understatement.
