Confused by JB
JB has been a staple in my life for the past 18 years. I have read everything he has wrote, bought every cd and video, watched every interview, and been to every concert that has been within my means. I don't consider myself an out of control fanatic. These different moments are just kind of a mental break from the constant barrage of life. A certain song may remind me of a concert or a laugh that was shared with fiends etc. I was working the PM shift recently and had a friend tape an interview that was on t.v. I work in a power plant so this interview was kind of a light at the end of the tunnel on another long lonely PM shift. About five minutes into the interview Jimmy said in jest that sometimes he thinks to himself his fans should"get a life". I know what he was saying and I am taking it in the exact context of which it was said. He laughed and the interview continued. I have watched it four or five times and it is really bothering me. For lack of better words it hurt my feelings. That one weekend a year I spend at a concert is a break. The one time each year I really don't concern myself with the rigors of life. I feel as though now I am being laughed at. I realize this fictional world he has created is nothing more than a state of mind I just hope I am able to regain that euphoric feeling when I here his music or see his plane in a magazine. My wife tells me that I am taking this to serious and that it was something he said on a whim and in no way reflects his perception of his fans. My response to her is that he has been doing this a long time and is to a point where he can speak his mind freely. I know this is petty and I will see you at the next concert but thanks for listening. If you can make me feel better about this or maybe someone feels the same way, feel free to e-mail me. Thanks again. Roger

Phinz:
If you are taking it too seriously, DON'T!
Not many people have more of a sense of humor than Jimmy Buffett, and he says a lot of things in jest.
Believe me, he really and truly appreciates his fans, and says so at the end of every concert. He has more fun than we do at his shows, and he's quick to let us know it.
Continue to go to your concerts, continue to have your fun with your fellow P.H.s, but remember-let Jimmy have HIS fun too, or else the concerts and the music may soon be a thing of the past.
Jimmy has been doing these concerts for 30-plus years. I'm sure it would've stopped long ago if he didn't feel much affection for his fans.
As he said-as long as WE'RE there, he will be too.
He's kept his word so far-let's do our part too.

Welcome to Buffettnews.......now lighten up a bit.
I too was a little baffled that Bubba would say such a thing on national television, but if you've been to a few concerts you know deep down that he loves his job and that comment wasn't meant to be taken personally by his phans. If it did catch you off guard and now you're questioning whether Jimmy is a great singer/songwriter but is turning into an ungrateful a**hole, well then just think back at all those good times you've had at the shows, and not just the tailgates. The emotion Jimmy and the Reefers put into each and every song is amazing, considering some of the songs they've played in concert 50 times a year for MANY years. A simple comment like "get a life" followed by a sarcastic chuckle shouldn't get your feathers ruffled.

Phinz,
I, too, welcome you. Warning, prepare for a s*** storm. It seems like a lot of people (myself included) feel the need to "let out the steam" on our first post. The people around here will be defending JB when they wake up and log in and read your post. Don't take it personally (even though some may attack you personally), because the majority of BNers are good people.
Now, as for JB's comment, get a life (that is not only a quote but a directive). If this is all you can think about, maybe you are an out of control fanatic. Dude, think about it, he stands up there and sees people who follow him from venue to venue. Using up vacation time to simply attend another show/tailgate party. He loves what he's doing and, at 57, wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for us. I took the statement as "JB isn't the ONLY thing in life". If you stick around this website long enough, wait until Jan-Feb timeframe when the real whining begins. ESPECIALLY when the concert schedule finally comes out and he has skipped <enter town name here>. You will not find a bunch of whiny old ninnies (my apologies to old ninnies) than the supposed adults on this board. That is how I take his comment. As for me, I have seen him 43 times in 27 years. I have all the albums, except SYKBH and the box set. I read his books, buy his merchandise, watch the videos. Am I an out of control fanatic, some casual observers would say yes. Do I get ticked off every time he says something I don't agree with? Heck no.
So, I will close this dissertation with a warm welcome to you and a hearty "GET A LIFE".
Thank you. I now return you to your regularly scheduled postings. Let the flaming begin...
One more thing, watch out for nycparrothead. He has a proclivity for humping. (See, this is how serious we take life)

Welcome Phinz. What can I say that everyone else already hasn't? Being a laid back person I certainly won't flame you. I do understand where you are coming from. I saw the segment as well and was concerned for about 2 minuntes when I heard that quote from Jimmy. I agree with others that we are an unusual sort of music fan and Jimmy knows that. So what if he made a bit of jest at us? He loves us anyway and makes the dollars off of us and will play as long as we listen. He lives eternal in the thousands of tracks he has cut so even when he's done touring we'll still be rocking on.
My non PH friends gave me more trash over that quote that I myself felt necessary. They just don't understand, seriously.
Anyway, put on some tunes and sit back and stop worrying. No one is perfect 100% of the time! Welcome to BN!

Keep in mind that the quote came from an interview more than 5 years ago, 60 Minutes was updating an old story.
The day after it aired, I think a few people were surprised to hear Jimmy say "get a life". I feel his attitude may have changed a little since then.
From his perspective, he sees a throng of people who sell out all his concerts, go all out for the parking lot, buy his books, CDs and videos and rush to his stores and restaurants. What he doesn't see as vividly (but I think has a better understanding of now) is how we spend the rest of our lives working our jobs, taking care of our families and volunteering for causes that are important to us - that is harder to see from the stage.
So let that comment go, I'm sure it was not intended to insult some of his greatest fans.
There is my 2 cents.

Ack, well, my husband rolls his eyes at my JB CDs and my, umm, beach-themed home office, and tells me to get a life, but I still love him anyway!
Think of it like that - it's like family - Jimmy loves his fans, but every now and then he probably thinks we're all a little nuts, just like we love him, but every now and then we raise an eyebrow if we think he's getting a wee bit too commercial, and all that.
Plus, as wacky as the average fan looks to an outsider, I bet JB is privy to some really crazy moments with some really unhinged fans, just like any celebrity. So, maybe he said something lighthearted and flip without thinking about how other people might "hear" it, or maybe he was thinking about some of the scarier moments being famous has brought him - who knows?
Like family, you forgive and forget, and stick around for the stuff that really matters - the good stuff.

If Jimmy didn't care about his fans he wouldn't have shown up at at MOTM
for a semi-private concert for those 3,000 registered parrotheads.
He knows and appreciates what we have done for him and we appreciate
what he has done for us.

Re: Confused by JB
I saw the interview too (and, remember the first airing...before the update) and laughed at the comment. I agree, I need to get a life. Sitting at my office writing lighthearted missives about Jimmy Buffett and the island lifestyle is hardly the way to get ahead in life. Speaking of which...phinzzup wrote:JB has been a staple in my life for the past 18 years. Re: Jimmy
Absolutely! And he did the concert at MOTM for free! Sadly, I missed MOTM this year. He loves us, that part of the tv interview on "60 Minutes" was from the mid 90's....he was just being a little sarcastic, he loves sarcasm! And welcome, phinzzup. well isn't that interesting. I had just about enough of Buffett, his songs and fantasy lifestyle. Was not his fault mind you, I think all parrotheads go through stages where the last thing they wanna hear is anything Buffett. His comment just happen to come when I was nowhere close to in the mood so it was easy to get riled up over his off the cuff crack. But the truth is parrotheadism is just a part of life and by no means life itself and like anything we go through stages of development where sometimes it matters and others, well, it does'nt matter a lick.
Realizing this of course puts it all in perspective, that we parrotheads often gather for much more then a concert, we gather with good phriends, meet knew ones and reconnect with others maybe we have not seen in a awhile. That in the end is what life is all about, the relationships established, the connections made and shared experiences, in essence creating the photo album of the mind. And if we are all wrong and Buffett does not appreciate us well that is one more thing we share in common when we phlock to his concerts, our club parties etc. Either way, no matter how he meant it, it's a win win gig for us parrotheads
