I remember my girlfriend telling me last year that I had to shut the football game off while we were eating dinner. I politely explained to her that the Cowboys don't get shut off for any reason whatsoever and if she even tried to make me turn it off for Thanksgiving dinner that her parents would be reading about her death and mutilation in the following day's newspaper.
So, do you have the football game on in the background while you're having dinner or do you shut it off?

Off. But only during the meal. It goes right on as soon as we finish. And if you eat slow you get the game on while you finish up.

that's pretty much how it works when we're at my in laws' for dinner. In my family, I think we always had the game on, even though there were varying degrees of interest in it. On a scale of 1-10, our interest may have ranged from about 1 to 4. In other words, you have the game on just because you're supposed to

Yes if it's college football or Hockey because nothing else is worth watching.
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.
