Breaking Stones

I know I'll get grief for hitting after the flag but I'm really p*** about Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest. No JB, no Jim Croce, no Grateful Dead, no Jerry Jeff Walker (Mr Bojangles), no Steve Goodman (City of New Orleans), no John Prine!. This is bogus. If I had a subscription I'd cancel it.

Hmmm... I thought there were a couple of Dead songs. Guess I was wrong.

You should have seen Bob Dylan's interview on 60 Minutes last night and heard his thoughts about Rolling Stone's Top 500 list. Priceless.

Matter of fact I did see Bob on 60 Minutes. He said to the effect that recognition was fleeting. Today they celebrate your numerous hits on the list, tomorrow it's Bob who?

Of course Jimmy is immune to all the above. Little official recognition besides the artificial bs buzz of LTC and 5 O'Clock but he don't need it. Nobody works his fans harder than JB

I have to do disagree about Buffett's recognition. Folks tend to forget he enjoyed quite a bit of success back in the 70s. As far as lists like the Rolling Stone one are concerned, I honestly never expected to see any of his songs included on there anyway. That's not to say I don't think any of them are worthy, just that I would have been surprised to see any of them on there.

I only had to read down to 9 to see that the list was really bad.

I was curious (and bored) so I did some quick analysis. Here is everyone with 5 or more songs on the list;

Artist...............................Songs
The Beatles......................23
The Rolling Stones............14
Bob Dylan........................12
Elvis Presley.....................11
Jimi Hendrix......................7
The Beach Boys................7
Prince...............................6
U2....................................6
James Brown....................6
Sly & the Family Stone.......6
Led Zeppelin......................6
Chuck Berry......................6
Little Richard.....................5
Buddy Holly......................5
The Who...........................5
Elton John.........................5
The Clash.........................5
The Drifters......................5
Ray Charles......................5

Here are the top ten years according to the list;
Year.....Songs
1965.....35
1966.....31
1967.....27
1969.....25
1968.....24
1964.....23
1970.....22
1971.....20
1956.....20
1957.....19
It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win
But the authorities insist on my leaving
Take care my American friend

I think if we all did our own lists they would all differ greatly and we'd see that there is no universal list we'd all agree on. Thank God.

yeah, but he only had 2.5 hits in the 70s, and only one was really a "smash hit". I think we can all agree that his income has gone up exponentally since the 70s.

2.5 hits? How does one do that? Not to mention, the chart position of his hits is not what's being referred to but his overall popularity. Some folks seem to think License to Chill is his first flirtation with popularity of any kind when it's not.

The local classic rock station here in NYC, WAXQ 104.3, just did a listener survey to get the top 1043 classic rock songs of all time. Buffett had 3 songs on the list (unless I missed some, the list isn't searchable and my eyes were starting to glaze over). Margaritaville was somewhere around #240, Why Don't We Get Drunk was #921 and Fins was #1023. One thing I noticed while I was going through the list, Sinatra was #665 with New York, New York. I didn't think that was a rock song.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
