ya, Theo will be forced to pull the trigger on another pitcher if Pedro goes to the Mets
oh & Curt's injury was major to start with, I'm not surprised he won't be ready. After what he did in October he can come back whenever he feels 110% for all I care, he deserves the best non rushed rehab out there

Wells passed his physical. It was touch and go for awhile considering he weighs 280 lbs and smokes a carton of cigarettes a week

Not to mention he usually downs a handle of Jack Daniels every night at which point he falls and proceeds to injure himself (case and point: going on the DL last year after "supposedly" falling and breaking a "wine glass" over his hand.)
I bet he would be fun to tailgate with outside GW's for the Buffett shows

Theo best sign Orlando then asap!
Plus the way he sounded in his interviewthey are planning on deals beyond the Winter meetings...
Stay tuned
Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein will continue to explore all opportunities in his attempt to put another championship-caliber team on the field in 2005.
"I'm confident that there's a way to reach our goals for 2005 and beyond, which is winning," said Epstein. "We want to sign smart deals, we want to try and mitigate risk where we can. We don't want to hamstring the franchise from any onerous commitments. You have to take chances in this game but you have to take educated risks and educated gambles, so that's what we do."
Deals done: Signed LHP David Wells to two-year contract (pending physical); signed LHP John Halama to one-year contract (pending physical).
Rule 5 activity: Selected OF Adam Stern.
Goals accomplished: The Sox were able to fill one of their pitching vacancies with the addition of Wells, who is 10-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 25 postseason starts. They also brought on Halama, who provides depth as a swingman.
Unfinished business: With it looking likely that Martinez will go to the Mets, the Sox will be on the prowl for another elite starting pitcher. Because there aren't any left in free agency, expect Epstein to be active on the trade market. A's right-hander Tim Hudson is the most attractive option available. Boston's other big goal is to retain the services of free agent catcher Jason Varitek.
GM's bottom line: "We made a couple of moves here, but we're not done. It's been a late-breaking offseason. I'm not optimistic about our holiday break -- it will probably be pretty busy and January will probably be pretty busy, but that's the way things go. We're going to keep working until we have a club we're happy with." -- Epstein

Interesting factoid from ESPN... 5.8 members of the last 5 WS championship teams were added to the team after May 15.
This fact helps me settle down a bit. If Hendry doesn't pull all the pieces of the puzzle together by spring training, I have to remind myself that it's a long season and many deals can go down after the first of April!
Oh, but I wish Renteria would go to the Red Sox... anything to keep him out of the Cubs division!!!

BREAKING NEWS: RENTERIA SIGNS WITH RED SOX
The Boston Globe is Breaking News that Edgar Renteria signed a four-year $40 million contract with the Red Sox today, giving Boston an All-Star shortstop. "The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria said from his home in Colombia. "They won the Series this year and I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win." Renteria, who played for St. Louis last season, is a 4-time All-Star, 2-time Gold Glove winner. He has a career average of .289. St. Louis lost to Boston in four games in the World Series, and Renteria made the last out, grounding out to Keith Foulke. "I played with them for six years but finally we didn't come t an accord." A nine-year veteran, Renteria was one of the prime free agents on the market. His decision came down to Boston and St. Louis. "It (Boston's offer) was more generous. They were more interested in my playing for them." The Red Sox offer also includes an option for a fifth year.

I just read a story on mlb.com by Fred Claire that basically outed Pedro as wanting to leave because he's not the team's Ace anymore
well he certainly will be in NY (no disrespect to Mets fans..)

ESPN Insider which is ESPN's pay for news part of the site

said this earlier today:
ESPN Insider: "Dec. 15 - According to a source close to the situation, shortstop Edgar Renteria will be returning to the Cardinals in 2005 – and the deciding issue was not money. Even though the Red Sox offer (about $36 million over four years) trumped St. Louis's reported final offer ($32 million over four years), Renteria chose familiarity and comfort with his surroundings – teammates, coaches, medical staff – over a few million dollars. His agents are currently in the process of informing other interested teams of Renteria's decision that he will not entertain their offers, but instead will be re-signing with St. Louis."
AND
From a source very familiar with the discussions between the Renteria camp and the Cardinals, I was told today that Edgar will be returning to the Cardinals in 2005. No doubt about it, book it, a sure thing. As I had suspected all along, the deciding issue was not money. Even though the Red Sox “offer” last weekend proved to be false, or at best inflated and premature, there was no doubt that Detroit and perhaps other teams were prepared to pay more than the Cardinals. For Edgar, the most important issue always was comfort with his surroundings – his teammates, coaches, medical staff and the like. He turned the negotiations over to his agents, but all along, in his heart, he knew he would remain a Cardinal. Renteria’s final decision bears that out. His agents are currently in the process of informing other interested teams of Edgar’s decision that he will not entertain their offers, but instead will be re-signing with St. Louis.
Dan Rather must be proud
