3 starters aged 39 or olders, 2 of which looked their age last year (Moose, Brown), 2 who are coming off of 1 good year following careers of disappointment & underachieving (Wright, Pavano). Johnson is still great, but for how long?

Johnson is 41, Mussina is 36, Pavano is 29, Wright is 28, and Brown is 39.

Compare that with Schilling is 38, Wells is 41, wakefield is 38, arroyo is 27 and clement is 30.

Combined the Sox rotation is 1 year older than the Yanks. Granted Wakefield throws a knuckleball so he could probably pitch till he's 50. The one thing in common about these guys is that they are workhorses, Johnson, Mussina, Wells and Schilling are all able to pitch a lot of innings.

I dont see any reason why the Yankees cant get at least 2 solid years from Johnson, he hasnt really showed any signs of letting up.

Wait til that 47 acre back gives out again.

Missed my point. Wasn't defending the Sox rotation, just saying the Yanks better temper their expectations...

Over the last 3 years, the three "old guys", Johnson, Mussina, and Brown have combined to miss 62 starts!!!! That's when they were all on different teams. The combined effect of having Brad Halsey pitch that often could be devistating!

As for Pavano and Wright, both are coming off of very good seasons. Prior to 2004, however, Pavano was a career 39-48 with an ERA near 5.00.
He has never had a winning season.
Wright (who also has a history of arm problems), came into last season at 37-37, but hadn't finished above .500 since 1997!!! Even WITH last year, his career ERA is over 5.00.

mexcooker12 wrote:I also believe Beltre could be a mistake for the M's. He has only had one good year in the 5 years he has played ball and coincedently was the year he was due up for a new contract. I think hes still real young (25-26?) so maybe those first 4 years could be chalked up to youth, but a lot of baseball experts dont think this is a great deal. Also Sexson has proven to be very injury prone. We'll see how it all works out.
THE RED SOX OFFERED 60 MILLION, HE WANTED 14 MILLION A YEAR . THE PLAN WAS TO SIGN BELTRE,RENTERIA,AND J.D. DREW.THAT IS IF THEY COULD MOVE MANNY.I GUESS YOU COULD MOVE MUELLER TO 2ND.MYSELF I KEEP MANNY.I THINK HE'S THE BEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN BASEBALL.

Red Sox trade Dave Roberts to SD for Jay Payton and Ramon Vazquez, a minor leage player and cash. :(

Even though he played very little Dave Roberts will always be a legend in Boston

Roberts doesn't steal that base then Boston most likely does not win the ALCS and obviously doesn't win the World Series.

Thank you so much Dave Roberts!!!!

Orlando Cabrera, the free-agent shortstop who helped the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years, has agreed to a four-year, $32 million contract with the Angels, the Sporting News has learned.

I'm glad Boston got Matty Clement! He's an awesome dude. I'm happy to see him going to a quality team.

I am glad he is coming because I now have an excuse to grow a nasty-ass goatee :pirate:

As for the Johnson trade... last time I heard that MLB just had to aprove the trade it had to do with ARod coming to Boston. Thank the dear Lord that trade never went down :pirate:

The Yankees' pitching staff will crash and burn in 2005:
Randy Johnson is 41 and has a bad knee
Kevin Brown is 39 and has a bad head
Mike Mussina is 36 and had the highest ERA of his career last year
Carl Pavano, even with his 18-8 record in 2004, has a losing record for his career and has only won 57 games in 7 years
Jaret Wright won a total of 20 games in his first 2 years but won only 32 more in the next 6 years (15 of them last year)
Tom Gordon is 37 and was overused (a career high in appearances) last year
Mariano Rivera is 35 and was overused (also a career high in appearances) last year
