re-sizing avatars

i need some help. how can i resize an image off of the internet and make it an avatar? I know how to make it an avatar obviously, i just have no idea how to resize it.

Do you own any photo editing software? Photoshop, Photoshop elements etc?

I don't know that software...
I'll tell you what I do and maybe there's something in that software that's similar.
Usually I save an image from the web onto my hard drive.
I then open the image through Photoshop.
If it's not square, I highlight a square section of the image and crop it so it's square.
Once I've done that, I reside it to the 100x100 or whatever it needs to be by selecting image > size
then I save it as a jpg or gif
or, just email it to me and I'll size it for you...

okay, thanks Lee . . i actualy found out i do have Photoshop Elements, so i resized it to a reasonable size, and i saved it, but now how do i put it on here?

I don't know. I tried that once and never saw the photo end up there. And NO it wasn't obscene or nasty.
