CNN is saying this morning that as many as 21 000 are dead. Such a tragedy. Nature's forces are not to be underestimated, are they?
Relief efforts are underway here in Canada, too.

My friend just got back a couple of months ago from Thailand. He stayed at the island where they filmed the movie The Beach. The bungalows he stayed at were one of the many that were destroyed. He came back with some amazing stories and beautiful pictures.

I saw an article in the paper that said as a tsunami is going across the ocean heading to land it can reach speeds of up to 500 mph and as it approaches the shore it's as loud as a train. They said if you don't get any advance warning, once you can hear it you only have about 5 minutes to get to higher ground.
Enzo Boschi, the head of Italy's National Geophysics Institute, likened the quake's power to detonating a million atomic bombs the size of those dropped on Japan during World War II, and said the shaking was so powerful it even disturbed the Earth's rotation.
"All the planet is vibrating" from the quake, he told Italian state radio. Other scientists said it was early too say whether the rotation was affected by the quake.
I saw the pics of the waves that someone had recoreded this morning on the Today Show, and they were huge! They didnt even look real, it was like watching a movie. What a tragedy!
the toll is up to 24,000 dead and I expect it will climb higher.
I have a very good friend from South Africa that vacations with his wife in Thailand... I am not sure when they were suppose to leave.
I can only hope and pray they are safe and elsewhere besides the affected areas!
Unfortunately, There will not be closure for so many people.
I don't think they will recover and identify the majority of the bodies...maybe with DNA tests but the conditions and no telling where bodies will wind up........or how to preserve the remains........
I don't know how many lives were lost in Krakatoa.......I don't know if they will ever get a confirmed total of the lives lost....in this disaster...many places were lowland and remote....
A few years back a rogue wave around 25 feet high, hit Daytona Beach...luckily it was at a time when no one was on the beach so no loss of life occurred. I forget the exact details on it. There was much speculation on it and the cause......seaquakes were blamed for it.
There are no words for these castastrophic loss of life events.
