There is a town in SC that has a chitlins festival every year, and
TONS of people come from all around.

I just find it hard to believe that people love
pig intestines. What do they taste like? The fat of bacon?

Greens are all part of the same family, but collards, mustards and turnips each have different flavors.

Mustard greens are generally a little spicy, tangy or even hot. Collards are mild and have a slight cabbage taste. Turnip greens are sweet if picked when the leaves are small.

But I count cabbage as a "green" on new years.
Maybe that is why I don't get rich every year.

Mmmmmmm...black eyed peas.

Collard <gag reflex> greens!! Blech! I'd rather eat a handful of weeds.

Perhaps this is why I also am not blessed with the type of money that folds. :-?

You can keep the brussel sprouts, but can I come over, Cate? :D

Tradition in my family? Herring. Gag. :-? And I love sardines and anchovies. I just can't stand herring. But my grandfather would swear by it. ;)

Penny? Is your background Scandinavian? All those types of fish sure are! :D

In addition to corned beef and cabbage on new years day (blech on both counts!) my family always had scramble eggs and Canadian Bacon at midnight. I never knew why, but I always carried it out in some fashion. For instance, yesterda (New Year's Day) we had Ritz crackers w/ cheese and Canadian Bacon.

I finally called my dad to ask why the Canadian Bacon thing was our tradition. Unfortanately, I was too tipsy to remember what he said. Something about my brother and sister.........
