Nicki,
I decided to finish reading Winds From The Carolinas before I do Key Weird.

WFTC is one of the best books I have ever read. Has anyone else read it...I'm probably the only one who hasn't :)

It is one that was on Jimmy's list. The Juan Cadiz character is the absolute BEST.

Better go finish that one today...it is over 600 pages and I'm really, really enjoying it. Many times I have laughted out loud and I have cried. It has all kinds of historical events and geography of Bahamas, etc.
Can't find but 13 USED copies of WFTC at amazon. Whassup with that? :(

Several letters to Amazon about this have netted some vague form letters and a couple additional small orders. :-? Amazon will get the books to you, it's just going to take a little while.

In the meantime, you can still get Key Weird from http://www.tacobob.com if you're signed up with PayPal. It's a little cheaper and usually ships the next day. Sorry for any inconvenience Amazon may be causing.

Blue Lonesome sounds good to me btw, I'll try to check it out. How about 92 in the Shade? I think that was written about the time JB first hit the Keys.
Ya know,I've had "92 in the Shade" for quite some time and have started reading it about 3 times before it just started seeming very strange.
Funny because it's not a very long book either.
But now with me reading Tim Dorsey's zany books maybe I can get through it. I know there's a movie of it starring Peter Fonda but it's very hard to find.
I got the movie 92 in the Shade and watched it last night. That was one strange, awful movie. I was vaguely familiar with the storyline from the book, but HOW BORING.

The saving grace of the movie is all the great old shots of Key West.
How did you manage that?
I was gonna buy it online once and the price was through the roof.

I paid too much for 92 in the Shade. I honestly thought I was getting a classic movie. (And I did!) Like I said before, it is worth the price I paid for the scenery around Key West in 1976.

Also, I keep thinking about things from the book. I have read lots of Key West stuff, and things from this one keep popping back in my mind.

Winds From The Carolinas was written in 1964, but has been reprinted many times.

I found these online. Softcover is $15.95.

I prefer to order from amazon and there are good used book sellers out there.

Alibris.com is also a good seller.

The used copy I got was ok...moldy and readable, and I have treated it very delicately. It is a first edition with great dust jacket, which I removed. I wanted the original picture of the jacket. I wish I had gotten the paperback instead.

OK, got to go watch Barbara Walters and Oscars.

Yeah. I KNOW people there who are possum ranchers!

I didn't get very far, but I'm liking it.

Am still reading WONDER BOYS during lunch hour. It's quirky. . .and I'm having to use a dictionary as I read (something I rarely need for modern fiction).

Enjoy!

Hello conched & all Bn Book Clubbers - I am thoroughly enjoying Key Weird. (I am on p. 133) Wanting to be a good book club member, I have actually taken notes (I hope there are no spoilers here):
-first & foremost, I was so pleased to see my screen name spelled correctly (that's N-I-C-K-I) on p. 29
-I love the Dalton Gang's resemblance to George & Lenny of "Of Mice And Men" fame
-the Buffett references are fun (esp. Captain Tony's and the Margaritaville cafe on p.75 and the whole Margaritaville scenario on p. 109 ) but I wonder if Marty the Manatee & "Tequila Breakfast" isn't the REAL Jimmy Buffett
-and on a few personal notes, I love crosswords myself, and I would love to see Juan Ponce juggling his cats; my calico Annie would never stand for it - or maybe Juan could charm her?)

I'm anxious to read other reactions - take care & have a great weekend, everyone!

Haven't had time to really "get into it" but plan to this week-end.

Love the dry humor.

It took amazon several days to deliver mine. But so far, I've laughed out loud a lot.

Nancy: Did you read THE HOURS (Michael Cunningham) when it came out? You might like it. The movie did stick pretty much to the story, but some of Cunningham's sentences are so beautiful you have to go back and read them again. Don't know why I haven't suggested it to you before. Go read a few of the early reviews at amazon. The later ones are just jealous authors. It won the 1999 Pulitzer and the PEN/Faulkner.

If you ever read MRS. DALLOWAY (Virginia Woolf), and liked it, you would like what Cunningham did in tribute to Woolf.

Just a suggestion.

ETP, I haven't read HOURS, but will...

Nicki, what's a seven letter word for trouble starting with s_ _ _ _ _ _ ?

nutmeg, I think this is the fastest, easiest way to get Key Weird.

Off to read Key Weird now and look for the Jimmy references!

Key Weird is certainly a very funny read - glad everyone is enjoying it. I think I would have liked it even without the JB references but they sure do add to its charm.

conched, I don't know - is this a trick question? All I could think of was "scandal" but that's only one kind of trouble! :-?

I think it was sheriff from that first day when the sheriff drove up to the possum ranch...it was really early in the book.
