well that certainly gives a person something to think about :D
Doesn't it though?? I first heard it a few years ago, and have heard it considered since then a few times. Given their close friendship, and the fact that she has never published again, who knows.

I've gotten great ideas from you guys (THANKS!) and received Losing My Faculties for Christmas - it was great! I just finished a really good book for dog lovers (and non-lovers, too) - Marley and Me - the Life and Times of the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan. What an enjoyable book - you can laugh & cry on the same page... Sparky

Sure hope you're liking THE QUIET GAME, Terri.

I'm waiting for Iles' latest . . . I'm on the list at the library.

Just finished OLYMPIC WANDERING . . . a guy follows the footsteps of Ulysses around Greece. Easy, quick.

Am working on the final MITFORD book, but not wanting to hurry through. I love Father Tim and his lovely spouse Cynthia.

I saw CAPOTE over the holidays. Powerful. Compelling. Sad. Hoffman really nailed the part.

Happy reading!

the mitford series was absolutely delightful-have passed those books on to a wide variety of friends.

I'm so loving this book. The characters are so diverse and so HUMAN.

Father Tim is a wonder. He treats each and every one of God's creatures with love and kindness and compassion.

This is sweet, gentle fiction. And nobody does it better than Jan Karon. :D

Maybe I need to read this series again; I could use some of Father Tim's kinder, gentler nature.

For those of you who read Pat Conroy's books, The Water Is Wide has been made into a Hallmark movie for television to air on Sunday, January 29.

http://pressroom.hallmark.com/hhof_the_ ... _wide.html

It is autobiographical and describes Conroy's time teaching the Gullah children on Daufuskie Island in the late 60's.

The old movie, Conrack, tells the same story.

Prince Of Tides

African drums are silent and the Wingos
are poets at last
Out on Dafuskie Island, the bulldozers
bury the past
And the low country sinks, she cannot swim
the dogwood feels the hurt
While the foursome plays on borrowed days in
their alligator shirts.

I'm currently reading Ten Hours Until Dawn by Michael J. Tougias

It's the true story of heroism and tragedy aboard the CAN DO, a boat out of Gloucester, MA during the Blizzard of '78.

Maybe 'cause it's in my own back yard, I've sailed and motor-boated these waters all my life, or because I lived thru and drove in that Blizzard, but I am thoroughly enjoying this book, well enjoy isn't the right word. It is kinda scary to read what these guys went thru. I know the waters they are talking about and they're not lying. We've been run-aground in them too, and sailed in them in the winds ahead of a thunder and lightning storm, which is no where near the conditions they were in.

I spose if you liked the Perfect Storm, you'll probably like this one. :)

Thanks-I knew it was in the works, but had not seen an on air date. Meanwhile I wish there was a new Conroy novel to look forward to!

PRINCE OF TIDES is one of my all time favorites. I've read it too many times to count. Never ceases to amaze me. It's not an 'easy' read, but it's sooo worth every ounce of brain power it takes to get to the end.

My first was Lords of Discipline-found the first 100 pages or so boring, and then could not put it down. I would always read on the El going to work, and on the way home. I was nearing the end of the book, and continued reading on the bus from the El stop to my house, read walking up the stairs, and told my husband that I had 20 pages left and could not talk until I finished the book!

You don't think that had anything to do with the divorce, do you?

When Beach Music came out, I stood in line for 2 hours to get my copy autographed (was second in line) and had a nice, brief conversation with him.

Wow. That's really neat.

As much as I love PoT, I haven't read anything else he's written. Weird, I know, but the books/jackets/etc just haven't "struck" me.

I just finished the MITFORD book. So sweet. Kind. Caring. And Father Tim does have a wicked sense of humor!

If you've not read the MITFORD series, I recommend reading them in order of publication. Otherwise, you miss all the changes life brings to a bachelor vicar! It's really a lovely series and I hate to see it come to an end.

After Conroy's Beach Music came out, I pulled out Prince Of Tides for a summer read, and read it using my dictionary the whole time to look words up.

POT is the only book I ever did that with and it took me quite a while to get through it. That's the only time I reread the book, but I can watch the movie over and over.

When I met Pat Conroy I told him that most of the time, my reading is character driven, and I read very quickly and am not terrible aware of nuances in language, but his books are so beautifully written that I slow down to savor every word.

Exactly. Conroy's prose is so lush. And the first few times I read PoT, I had to use my dictionary.

THE HOURS is like that, too. Michael Cunningham's take on Virginia Woolf's MRS. DALLOWAY. Lovely prose. Very internal.

Very much enjoyed Prince of tides, one of my all time favorites! HATED the movie! a very southern book was twisted into something unrecognizable by Steisand.
A quick read by Conway is "the water is wide" it is a lighter book about his time as a teacher in the S.C. lowcountry.

I really was looking forward to "Beach Music" but can't say that I enjoyed it all, I know he was going through a bad time personally while he was writing the book but it was so dark and depressing for 95% of the book then all of a sudden everything works out fine??

Wanted windknot to notice this post about the Hallmark movie.

I didn't like the movie, either. What does Striesand know about Southern mamas and their baby boys? :o

Thanks for all the great reading info! :)

I've just ordered (used) from Amazon The Water is Wide and The Prince of Tides. Can't wait. :)

What book should I read first in the Mitford series? I'm not familar.

Has anyone read Jonathon Kellerman's latest?
