Instead we got Kenny Chesney pretending he's Jimmy Buffett, or worse yet, Jimmy Buffett pretending he's country. Just between me and you, this ain't how it's supposed to be in a free country. I'm tired of this brainwashing. I want my music back.

I wonder just exactly HOW it's supposed to work in a 'free' country, hmmmm?? Who's brainwashed here? Who said it's 'his' music??

I'm an unabashed Parrothead, but I understand this guy's point. Problem is he's making his point over a decade after country music was ruined. The Garth Brooks of the world destroyed the country music this guy loved. I'm a big Haggard, Willie, Cash, Waylon, Kristopherson, Outlaw country music fan. I enjoy Don Williams and Hank Sr/Jr. This was good country music. Then all of the sudden in the early 90's pop had a terrible influence on good country music. I can't tolerate most of the stuff I hear today...including Toby Keith, Big and Rich, Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, etc. etc. Don't get me wrong, there are a few left out there that try to carry on the tradition, incuding George Strait and Alan Jackson, but most of these acts are pop bands with country accents. Its annoying.

Now I love Buffett. I love "License to Chill" despite its amazingly corny title and title track. But its not real country. Heck, its not even close to as country as an album like A1A or Riddles in the Sand. But I don't consider it island country. I just consider it "Buffett". I can see where this guy would be upset that those who made country music can't be found on country radio anymore. Its not really fair. And to further annoy this guy, you have others that follow and try and latch on to the momentum of country "island" songs. Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, etc.

Kenny is most certainly following Buffett. Like his music or not, he says the same thing Buffett has said for years, names his tours like Buffett, covers Buffett's songs, decides to make island records, and is trying to capitalize on the same "escapism" Buffett made famous decades ago.

I listened to Down To Earth and High Cumberland Jubilee over and over today. I am so thankful that country did not embrace that Jimmy and he got frustrated and went to Key West.

I love those two cds, but just think what course Jimmy's music might have taken. Thank the Lord, someone asked Jimmy if the grandfather could live in his song!!!

I can listen to any kind of country, including Willie Waylon Kris, although they left "country" a long time ago and started the Outlaw music. I listen to much more of Townes, Guy, Flatlanders, Joe Ely...and YES, Jerry Jeff Walker and his Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits, etc.

I even enjoyed Garth and Mr Achey Breaky to an extent. I still enjoy Shania and love Martina and Reba and Mary Chapin Carpenter and Alison Krauss. (Country ain't been country for a long time.)

But, I prefer the direction that country is going if it means more great songs from Kenny, Clint, and Alan with steel drums all over the steel guitar. Now, George Strait needs to do an island sounding song.

I can't tell you how good it feels to see Trip Around The Sun everytime I turn on CMT!!!

Personally, I can NOT wait to see what Jimmy comes out with NEXT! The single of A Salty Piece of Land should be released as a single...no? I'd love to see Coastal Confessions video from that ad for the simulcast on CMT!!

whooo hooo hoooo! Bless Jimmy for running back to the sea from landlocked Nashville. I'm glad he ran away down island.

Now, I'm gonna go read the article!!!

Sounds like that guy needs to go listen to his old albums to hear want he wants to hear.

Didn't we have to do that for years and years.!!!!???

He can turn his radio off while it's safe for us to turn ours back on! I listen to my local KTXN...they feed the parrotheads every day and play the kind of music I like. REK, JJW, Goodman, Prine, Steve Earle, Lucinda, Emmylou, Jack Ingram, Willie, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Los Lonely Boys, Flatlanders, Guy Clark, Paul Thorn, Todd Snider, Terri Hendrix, Sheryl Crow...all my kind of stuff and much much more.

I think their rule must be NO Nashville stars.

Mr. Greene,
Hi! Im Matt, a 15 year old Parrothead residing in Grove City, Ohio. I recently read your article regarding Mr. Buffett and his impact on country music. And I myself have been apt to disagree with some of Mr. Buffetts music before, but I fail to see where profanity was needed in your highly opinionated article.
That aside, I dont wish to change your opinion on his music, or on any music. All I wish to do is point out a few things. First and foremost, Jimmy is not becoming a country singer. He has always been one. Do you recall ever hearing songs like Railroad Lady? That was a JB oriogonal. There are also several lesser known country songs of Jimmys, such as Brahma Fear.
Also, I really want to know why it is that you see country music as descriptions of hard times? If I wanted music that talked about having a hard time in life, I would listen to rap. But I prefer to listen to some good, working class, fun relaxing songs, like you will find in the abundant Jimmy Buffett discography collection.
Now, I will allow that you are correct in the fact that the country music scene is changing. But I want to know, just how is it changing away from country music? Music is an ever changing industry, and every 10-20 years there is a cultrual shift in its style. Now I do think it is intresting that if we are on the verge of a cultural shift of country music to the beach, that it is Jimmy Buffett everyone is running to. Dont you find it intresting that a man with a career spanning over 30 years without a hit can have a following as big and devoted as Buffett's? And furthermore, can you believe that his fan base is not just working class people, but also just about everyone in the country music scene.
I would like to make it known that not a single person on License to Chill isnt a big fan, or most of them, Parrotheads.
Now that I have wasted an ample amount of time, to allow for the time I spent reading your article, I will leave you. I will not try to change your opinion, I just sincerely hope that you will come to respect Jimmy for the incredible man he is. Thank you for your time, and please, refrain from profanity in your articles, it would really help.
