Advice: Selling a car

I bought a "new" used car and therefore need to sell my old car. I didn't trade it in as the (trade-in) Blue Book was $10K - $11K and the dealership offered me between $7K - $8K  .

I was thinking of carsdirect.com or autotrader.com. Anyone ever use these or know of any better sites? I don't want to stick a "For Sale" sign on it and have anyone off the street wanting to test drive it.

Here is a picture of my baby  :

Not sure about carsdirect. I've had good luck with Auto Trader's "Run it till it sells" program. Not sure if they still offer it but you pay up front and they keep it listed until it sells - both in print and on their website.

You need to realize that there are 2 different books. The blue book and the red book. Most people don't know about the red book. It's the book dealers use to tell you what they should give for your car. Blue book is ALWAYS higher than the Red Book. The Blue Book tells you what to expect to pay for a certain car.

Really??

I thought Redbook was a magazine for women

I haven't heard of redbook, and KBB.com (Kelly Blue Book) gave me a prices for both trade-in and private sale.

When I worked in banking, all we used was the NADA book..
I hated doing loans....
Didn't want to turn anyone down...

The reason I know this is because I lived for 6 years with a man who had been in the used car business his whole life. His father was a dealer. I learned enough from those 2 to last several lifetimes  :-?

How honest were you with yourself about the condition of the car when you went to kbb.com? I've bought and sold a ton of used cars and bikes, and one thing that is pretty much universal is that the seller seems to think the car is in better shape than it really is.

You could put it on ebay. I know, it sounds strange, but I just read that more cars are bought and sold on ebay than autotrader.com.... A lawyer friend of mine just bought a *nice* used Cadillac on ebay.

Thanks for all the advice and input.

I looked it up on NADAguide.com (thank you Prthd119) and it fell right in the value I'd seen on other sites.

In regards to the condition of the car I was honest. The car is a 2000 with only 32K. I've added a car alarm with remote door locks, a duel air horn and a grill for the airscoop. The car itself is in great shape and looks brand new, no scratches, dings or dents. I've got the maintenence records showing regular service and oil changes including the last (recent) checklist that shows everything in the green except the tires which are at less than 25%. I priced the cost for new tires and deducted that from the overall value. I figure I won't get the cost back for new tires and that gives the buyer the option to get sticky or all-season (shudder) tires.

I posted it at work and got a few minor nibbles. I paid off the car and should be getting the title next week. When I get the title I'll put it on carsdirect ($35) and then Autotrader ($51) if I don't get much response. My insurance covers my old car for 30 days before I will need to pay extra for two cars so I've got a little time.
