Kenny Chesney new album buyers ONLY (page 7, halfway down)

Tully Mars was a cowboy who went to the beach and you sure don't hear about him running around the islands and boats in a cowboy hat!! It's like comparing something that is chocolatey to real chocolate... the chocolatey is missing the cocoa butter; it just doesn't have that true texture and flavor. I've been looking for it with KC but I just can't quite find it.

I think this is Nashville marketing at it's best. Buffett did it so lets copy him. Strike while it's hot. It's all about timing. I'm sorry, I don't buy any of this stuff about Chesney. (That's not a knock on anyone. Just my opinion. Nothing personal). I think KC more in common with the Tim McGraws than he does the Jimmy Buffetts.

Bottom line is if it sounds good, it's sounds good, marketing or not. and even if it's marketed it does not make it unreal.
Kenny was headed down this road well before Five O clock Somewhere.
Like someone said earlier Jimmy did not invent the Caribbean and he also does not have a copyright on island music any more than Bob Marley has a copyright on reggae or Hank jr/DAC/Waylon have a copyright on outlaw country. There's also nothing wrong Jimmy being a big influence. He's influenced a lot of us but does that mean we're copying him?
I'd bet if we were recording, we'd be making island music, at least I would. Mark Twain wrote "write what you know about" and since Kenny's been visiting the islands for years that's what he's doing.
But I guess he should have asked for permission from a lot of skeptics to record these songs about the life he lives since Jimmy Buffett is the only artist allowed to do it.
All of the other tropical entertainers should be informed of this too.

Again, for me it's about authenticity and believing in the product that you're getting. I'd much rather go to the real Venice or Paris than the Epcot version (and I'm fortunate that I've been able to do that) -- there's just an authenticity about the real places that you just can't recreate. That doesn't mean that there's only one real place (or artist) or that Epcot isn't fun; from what I've seen, Kenny's Epcot and Jimmy's Paris.

Tully Mars was nothing but a character in a book. That's like believeing that Harry Potter is a real person.

As far as picking apart anyone's looks - IMHO that is so narrow minded. I'm sure we all could pick apart each other's looks. Since you're from Indy I don't know if you're aware but it's nothing ususual for people of the south to one day wear their "cowboy" clothes and the next day wear non cowboy clothes. I'm sitting in an office right now with dress pants and lace up ropers on.

Now about the cd - there have been a few people post on the other thread that they could not stand Chesney but were broad minded enough to take a listen and actually liked the music.

you know....I'm backing out of this discussion. I really don't care if you or your sister's brothers girlfriend's cousin's husband think Kenny is fake. I like him. Lots of people like him...people who go around judging other people and being critical are miserable little people. AND Im going to see him tomorrow night at a tsunami relife concert where all the proceeds go to the fund and its only $10 a ticket.....AND he's going to marry me one day! SO THHHHHHHHHHHHHPT!

would you say the same about Buffett and Far Side of the World?
I haven't heard anyone say "Who does Buffett think he is doing an album like that after taking a vacation to Africa? That's not authentic,

just marketing

Actually FSOTW was the last thing that Buffet did that was original and that I enjoyed. LTC although good just dosn't do it for me and MMIM was basically a greatest hits cd

FSOTW was definitely better than Beach House in my opinion although neither were as tropical as I would have liked.
I feel that LTC was getting back to the more tropical or at least fun sound.
Nothing against the artists that joined Jimmy but since he's re-recorded Piece of Work why don't he just go ahead and re-record the other duets a as solos for the heck of it? or at least for my total satisfaction

What was that old song "all I have to do is dreeeeeaaam"

Hey and it just hit me, if Jerry Jeff Walker can depart what he usually does and record an album like "Cowboy Boots and Bathin' Suits" then why can't Kenny?

"Cowboy Boots" is an island classic btw

Please don't take that wrong...FSOTW is one of my favorite Buffett albums. I was just trying to point out the flaws in some of the logic used to go against Kenny Chesney making an Island album.
If someone doesn't like the album, the music, the artist...that's fine, I respect that. But some of the arguements are baseless. Next thing you know, we'll have a thread about how much Phil Vasser sucks just because he plays the piano and is a rip-off copycat of Billy Joel.

Again, that's not my sentiment. Let me say that I like Phil Vasser and his music before I ruffle any other feathers.

OOO.. good point. I like Jerry Jeff! He wrote Railroad Lady with Jimmy, both have recorded that song on their individual albums.

Hey, I was just trying to create some examples (e.g. the cowboy hat) to help explain where I was coming from. Like I originally said, I think some of Chesney's music is fine (although I haven't yet heard this particular CD). KC just doesn't connect for me. Please don't take this so personally. Lace up ropers are fine with me although -- correct me if I'm wrong -- I'd guess they're not often worn to the beach. (Oh yeah, the Tully part was tossed in as satire
